Hi folks,

As per the title, the android messages app on my S23+ is showing multiple contacts (says +1) beside some contacts but showing as normal under contacts app..

Is this a bug? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi,

Are you refering to Google Messages app? I see "Multiple" against some contacts. It shows this when there are multiple mobile numbers available for that contact.

Those are the ones yes..

I understand that its thinking that there's more than one contact but this is not the case.. its basically the same number spaced differently.. more importantly, on the Contacts app they are all showing as 1 contact

Indeed, I see your point. Its one number but in 2 different formats and in Contacts, its just one number for most of my contacts. Strange! (I have S22+).

This is for Samsung contacts .....

Ok, go to the app and open

Click top LEFT 3 bars

MANAGE CONTACTS

MERGE CONTACTS .... here you can find any duplicates, and merge if needed

I offer advice for free, cos I think it'll help, if it doesn't, explain why, I might learn something new too.

Previous phones: most S series, Note 2, Samsung Alpha, iPhone 3gs, far too many Nokia's!

You've set in settings for the apps to tell you if an app has any notifications... So if you have missed calls, it might say 2 next to phone.

2 next to messages

No, this is nothing to do with notifications.. It is when you a drafting a new text message, and go to select a contact.. it says (+1 other) next to it.. when you click on it, it says "select destination" despite it being the same number

I  have this issue too, on Galaxy S23. Did anyone find a solution?

When I go to create a new message it shows a lot of my contacts with multiple phone numbers.

It makes sense to see 'multiple' if the contact genuinely has several numbers stored, but for many of them it's simply a matter of an identical number being presented both with and without a space for some reason, e.g:

  • Mobile01234 567890
  • Mobile01234567890

Or

  • Main+44 1234 567890
  • Main+441234567890

If I look in Samsung Contacts app, Google Contacts app or WhatsApp, the contact always has a space between the numbers. The only place I can see the number without a space is if I look at my Google account using the web interface on my laptop, where the main Contacts list shows all of the numbers without a space. Even then if I drill into a contact, it shows with the space so that's probably just a presentation thing in the web interface.

I'd love to know where the spurious space free numbers are coming from.

All the contacts are stored in my Google gmail account. I haven't currently got it syncing with my pone because I'm in the process of moving over to Outlook.
