Go to Gallery -> Settings -> Sync with Onedrive -> Free up phone space.
Deleting photos here ONLY deletes them from the device. Any new photos will store on both device and cloud, but you can repeat the above process when you need more space.

It's an all or nothing, unfortunately - Google Photos is the same.

If later on I wolud like to re-download some of the photos from One Drive, will they appear in the original folder (e.g. Camera) or in the "downloads" folder?
