There are subtle differences between the two options.

What-is-always-on-display-aod.

"  AOD) is a smartphone feature that has the device continue to show limited information while the phone is asleep"

Some like the aod because it can be set to continously show information on the screen such as time and date,  notifications indicators.

I have mine set to double tap on the screen to wake it up when or if I have aod activated.

The lockscreen options are ample for me.

I wish you all the best. Take care.  😎

The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.

Little addition:
Always on display has you look at the screen without touching it. Yu can see time, notifications etc.
Lockscreen? Well yu have to touch the phone ie wake it up.
