I'm still on an S7 and have been waiting to upgrade to the 10, but the images I've seen on GSMarena and various threads seem to show worse detail not better.
Has anyone posted examples of the same images taken with both RAW and JPG outputs? I need to know if I can get the results and quality I want and I'm prepared to use RAW if that's significantly better.
I don't have samples but I did learn some things about saving RAW images on my phone. I bought the S10 5G because I like to edit RAW images in PhotoShop and Lightroom. I began testing the phone and encountered a disturbing behavior. You can set the camera to save both a JPEG and RAW image at the same time. Note RAW format saving only works in the 'Pro' mode of the phone camera.
For my test I set the above settings, then zoomed in a bit on the camera (2 or 3X, I think). The JPEG image was fine but the RAW image did not reflect the zoom. This is NOT how it should behave. I tried my wife's S10, my previous Galaxy S8, and a brand new Galaxy Note 10+. They all behave the same. Both the JPEG and RAW image should have the same content.
I contacted Samsung Support and had three conversations with different support folks. I had to actually explain what RAW was to them. That was my first clue things weren't going well.
Since this is how my 4 year old S8 works I'm guessing either the problem was never reported and/or is a 1% problem...not many folks use RAW on a phone camera.
I tried three "third party" Android camera applications with the same results. I'm a disapppointed but the camera app for the phone is pretty nice and I love the wide-angle camera. I'll use my DSLR when I want RAW images.
