Original topic:

Is 2x optical zoom in S9+ truly an optical zoom?

I have a question regarding back cameras in the s9+ which I purchased recently. I noticed that the images I click in Samsung camera app using 'Auto' mode by selecting 'x2' icon (optical zoom - telephoto camera) were bad and pixelated.

To confirm my doubt, I hid the second telephoto camera with my finger and tried zooming with clicking 'x2' and the zoom in is working fine which indicates that the zoom is just digital zoom on the first normal camera and the camera app never uses the second telephoto camera.

Is anyone else facing a similar issue or am I missing something which I need to do to activate the telephoto back camera?

I am sorry, I am not able to change the subtopic from note9 to s9+.

I just provided the answer to this in another thread, but will paste it here too for reference.

No it's not fake.

The lense used when the user selects 2x zoom depends on the lighting conditions of the environment you are in. The TelePhoto lense is used under optimal/bright conditions, whilst the regular lense is used for darker environments as it will produce a better image.

To prove this you can try the following:

1. Open the camera and find something bright in the viewfinder. If you're outside or by a window try pointing at the sky.

2. Click 2x Zoom button

3. Now cover the main lense (the larger of the two) with your finger. You should still see a clear image as the device is currently using the tele photo lense.

4. Click the button to "unzoom". The device will switch back to the primary lense and your finger will clearly be obstructing the lense.

Hope that helps.
