Notification style - greyscale

Has anyone figured out a way to change the notification style? 

Am I missing something?

Mine are grayscale with a small black and white version of the app icon in the status bar when a notification appears. 

It used to be a colourful thing along with app icon.

It's made notifications a fairly poor experience  for me, because it now takes me a moment to realise which app it is coming from, and by the time I realise, the notification is disappearing so I then have to go pull down to check it.

From what I have been told, there have been users asking to simplify the notification style.

But I have also learnt that there is an ongoing discussion regarding that, so this might not be the final product.

I'm seeing greyscale notification on the lock screen which are barely recognisable..
