Red ball alert now a tiny dot

Hi, my app red ball alerts (with a number in the middle) has now changed to a dot, and I don't know why. Is this part of an update? How do I change the setting to revert to the previous red ball? Thanks for any help.

Options
Settings > notifications > advanced settings > app icon badges. Change to number from dot.
