How to find phone password

My grandsons phone hasn't been used for over a week and when he switched it on it's asking for a password. No password was set up on the phone, only a PIN as a screen lock. Can't get passed the password request screen. Any idea how to unlock his phone?

@NettyJ67: Is the phone asking for a password as soon as it is powered on, or after booting to the Lock screen? If it's the former, try entering the password for the Google account that is registered to the device, to see if this works. If not, please head to samsung.com > Scroll to the bottom of the page > Contact us, and get in touch with our Support Team, who will be able to arrange for an engineer to unlock the phone for you. Please be aware that proof of purchase will be required, as your query relates to a security feature of the device.
