can not figure out how to control map my run on my new galaxy watch 4 classic. im told i can stop/ pause my run by pressing "back button", but doesn't do it.

I suppose the app does not pause with back button press.
If you link Map my run to Samsung health and use Samsung health to track your run, you can use the back button to pause the workout and Samsung health will sync the data to Map my run.
