Messaging App

I am waiting for my Galaxy Watch 7 to be delivered.  I've not used a watch before.  My question is if I MUST use the Samsung Messages app on the watch or if I can also opt to use Google Messages (which is what I currently use on my S23 Ultra)?  If I can use Google Messages, will it sync between phone and watch?

I'm using Google messages on both watch and phone. All messages come up on both watch and phone.
