If I connect a Non-Samsung phone to a Gear Sport, will I still be able to send messages from the Gear Sport?

I am looking into buying a Gear Sport, but recently my Galaxy A5 broke so I got a new phone (Huawei). What I am wondering is if I connect my Huawei phone to the Gear Sport, will I be able to send messages from it?

Good question. I have a Huawei Nova 2i and when I first set my Gear Sport up it had the message free but now its
