Galaxy Watch 46mm Not counting steps

Received my galaxy watch on Friday but no matter what I do I cannot get the step counter to work properly, I've tried all the suggested things to fix the problem but nothing works, the step count is so intermittent or dosent work at all.

If I get up and walk around it counts nothing, jog up the stairs and it starts counting, sit down and get up again and the watch stops counting.

I've seen alot of posts with people with the same problem and all of them returning there watches, I love the watch and don't really want to return it if it's a software issue that can be fixed.

Anyone else UK having the same issue

atm I'm more inclined towards returning it than keeping it I'm afraid. What a shame...

I'll be making my decision during the week.

I've seen this too but after tightening the strap I don't tend too see this now. Also try wearing it a little higher up your arm, say a couple of finger widths above your wrist bone. Won't stop all of the heart rate issues we're seeing but might help some of your problems above.

I wear it as tight as possible, I compare it with my old Gear s3 which worked smooth in any conditions

Yes agree there are issues at the moment which hopefully will get sorted with an update. I have a Gear Sport and S3 and have compared all three together with the GW falling short on everything,  heart rate tracking, steps and sleep data.

I can see on your photo however that you're wearing the watch very near to your hand. I used to test Garmin fitness products and their advice was to always wear it higher up your arm away from your wrist bone, 2 finger widths higher up your arm from your wrist bone.

My previous watch, a Gear S3 worked perfectly while I was wearing it in the same position.

I've moved it to see but it's not very comfortable like wearing as in picture.

Could this be a software error which can be fixed with an update or is a hardware issue?

I'm hoping it is software otherwise I'd have returned mine within the 28 days! It's just a shame nothing official has been announced by Samsung.

Wearing as suggested indeed continuous reading during driving although it's a bit uncomfortable but I'll get used to it

However there are some high spikes recorded wrong as attached.SmartSelect_20181008-161958_Samsung Health.jpg

Yes you will still have issues, I do too, but hopefully not as many. I'm hoping that an update will come out shortly to rectify all these issues.

Works better now wearing it above the wrist, higher on hand. However I've noticed that the battery is worst now when reading continuously, when I was wearing it like in my previous picture, in fact the way I was wearing the old Gear S3 as well, the battery was better probably because there were hours when the HR wasn't measured

Anyway looking for the update

9543 steps in S-health from watch

Use Fit and Healthy app to export to Fitbit app.

That log file registers at 15943, which would be right.

this tells me the watch is recording steps OK but the software is whacked and not displaying correct info

So... This tells me a software fix could resolve issue

Not sure how you are getting 40% under-counting. I am only ever 5-10% out.

It really is odd everyone is getting different experiences.

Since updating my galaxy watch yesterday, steps seem to be far more accurate.

My Galaxy Watch is now on software version : XXU1BRH3

This release did mention improvements to Samsung Health app recording.

When compared to my Fitbit today (yes I did wear both and look a bit mental). They were within 100 steps of each other over 10,000 steps.

Gary - how has your first day been with the GW?

@lisafox16 - Ok I think, not a lot different to be honest.

Steps are the same, HR still breaking up during workouts and graphs through day are still broken as before. Did an hour circuit training this morning and HR tracked perhaps 60% of it, removed it twice to clean and make sure was a little further up but still kept losing it.

The watch face I use however continued to track HR throughout the workout so all not lost. Calories still down on expected, no deep sleep and no Nightmode prompt on this one. Battery still good though, on for 4 days same as first.

Only thing Ive noticed with new firmware is the alert during workout that tells me its lost HR tracking, that never happened on the old watch, helpfful I suppose and a sure sign that they know somethings not right or why include it?

I may buy a 42mm tommorrow and try a workout with that, Im wondering if the 46mm may be a little too big for my small wrists, anything worth a try at the moment.:thumbs-up-sign-emoji-modifier-fitzpatrick-type:

Thanks for reporting back Gary.

Your findings above go only to show that this is not a HW issue.
I hope they will fix these soon, however, I don't regret returning it as it was not working for the intended use at least in my case.

It seems like it's a great smartwatch, probably the best out there, but at the same time a very flawed fitness tracker...

Haha! So no different then?! Good point about the size of the watch. I think that is why I'm setting slight improvements with heart rate with me wearing it further up the arm and tighter, away from my narrower wrist bone area. Obviously with a bigger watch the placement is more important as the back of the watch has got to be flat and tight. It's just that I don't like the rose gold at all and find the all black a little masculine. I'm coming from a S3 Classic which I really liked. As I've seen improvements I'm still optimistic that over time, not straight away, we'll see an update with a few improvements. I'm not doing high impact workouts so not seeing such terrible heart rate data as you so whether you can wait that long I don't know. Good luck!

I understand people talking about moving the watch further up the arm and Samsung explicitly mention this in their manual. How far is far up though? I wear mine a little bit up naturally anyway. In addition, my Garmin Forerunner was located in exactly the same location and NEVER had one problem with the HR. Ever. So either Samsung's hardware is inferior, which I would be surprised with given it is far newer than my old Forerunner, or the software is not working as expected. I am really hoping the latter and it gets resolved without needing to return/replace.
