Samsung never respond, they are utter rubbish.   All I can say is we stopped getting these adds by going into the settings menu finding stuff about terms and privacy and disagreeing with everything.  They sometimes come back again with a firmware update, which I suspect most of the time rather than fixing anything with new firmware, the new firmware is just about adding more adverts!   Samsung have lost at three sales of TVs because I've told friends/family to stay well clear, and my wife was going to buy a Samsung phone, and I said no way are we having anymore of their products, so she didn't.         ... Hi   What sort of noise?   Ours has always made what sounds like a burglar alarm noise if heard from very far away.  It's not intrusive, can't be heard over normal audio, and being involved with electronics I know that sometimes equipment will make these sorts of noises.  These noises tend to be due to power supplies and power saving, which is way it comes about when the TV isn't needing much power.   Regards   Phil ... Hi   We've had this issue on a Q7F 2017 model TV playing from a Humax PVR, usually turning off the PVR and back on resolves it.  If you haven't tried that, perhaps try turning the source off then back on to resync it back up.   To be fair, Samsung TVs come with a number of bugs and issues it is better to take it back for a refund and spend your money elsewhere.   As for waiting for a firmware update to fix it, don't.  First of all they never give out any release notes on what the firmware changes, and all recent Samsung TVs suffer juddering issues on certain footage, we get it on our 2017 model and umpteen firmware updates later still not fixed, and a recent review of their flagship 2018 model also has the same issues.   You can't even get anyone to engage with you either here or their support to listen to issues and pass them on, unless you are prepared to put in a lot of effort to get past 1st line outsourced support that just want you to turn the TV off for 30 minutes or do a factory reset.   Samsung should stick to making phones, TVs they can't do very well.   Regards   Phil ... Hi   "It would be nice if Samsung could give an honest explanation of why the Qled doesn't support dts?"   You will never get an honest answer from Samsung, you'll be lucky to get any answer at all!   The reason it's not supported will be down to cost, either the hardware is broken or can't support it, so would cost more to add better hardware, or they don't want to pay the royalties.   Samsung TVs are half hearted by Samsung, somethings are good, like the QLED panels (although even here quality varies a lot, no two are the same!), but the supporting hardware and firmware and ongoing support are lacking.     However, DTS is normally a high-quality audio stream that a TVs speakers would never do justice to, so feeding everything into an AV amplifier is probably what most people do, rather than to the TV directly, and ARC is really dated and struggling to keep up with new audio formats, and is too complex for Samsung to get 100% working!  Of course, this doesn't help much if you want to use the TVs own apps or streaming abilities to play video with DTS streams.   Samsung TVs are best avoided, we'll never buy another one as we get fed up with all the judders and frame flashes that despite a dozen or more firmware updates (which we have no idea what these change as they refuse to give any release notes for them) have been unable to fix, and even their newest flagship models suffer the same issues.    Regards   Phil ... Hi   I can confirm that the white flashes on some test material I had recorded are still present, but it does seem reduced over all.   Judder is just as bad, this was even mentioned in a review for their latest Q8DN TVs so we can assume ALL the latest Samsung TVs from at least 2017 have this problem (review at https://www.avforums.com/review/samsung-q8dn-qe55q8dn-review.15184) they state:   " The very little 60p material we used was also displayed correctly but we did have some slight issues with broadcast 50i material. Hi     Much of the support of playing different video files comes from the software installed on the device, reasons for not supporting a format are licensing costs, support issues, piracy issues, i.e they'd rather you use a streaming service, and some hardware restrictions.  There are also hundreds or thousands of different variations of media file, and your best bet is a PC where if it isn't supported you have access to install the necessary software.   The only way you will know if your files are supported are to try them, but I doubt you will find the Samsung TV any better than anything else, quite possibly worse as they often use their own chipset, rather than an off the shelf chipset that the manufacturer has baked everything in to reach a wide customer base as possible.  Samsung tend to be 'you get what you are given and we are too busy getting next years new model ready to care about ever improving your experience!'   If you can, take some sample files into a shop and try them out on the TV, or perhaps edit some short clips in the format you use and upload them somewhere, I'm sure someone here would give them a go for you.   Regards   Phil         ... Hi   We are now on firmware version 1250.5 on the Q7F from 2017.  I've gone back to movie mode to test and so far no white flashes in this picture mode, and judder issues overall seem to be improved but not alleviated  completely.    Of course as is indicative of Samsungs poor customer support, still no release notes on what new firmware fixes, so it may be the white flashes just haven't had the footage shown that causes them yet.   Regards   Phil   ... Hi   Which picture mode are you using?     Only Movie mode gives you something close to a correctly calibrated picture without getting a professional in.  I'm not saying you don't have a problem with back light bleed, but this may be normal and only visible due to incorrect settings (Dynamic picture mode is the worst, it's completely un-natural and only designed as a buy-me setting for TVs in a brightly lit shop or to justify over exagerated claims of contrast ratios in the marketing) or due to trying to watch in a very dark room.  All LCD panels have some element of backlight bleed if you look for it or have brigthness up too high.   Regards   Phil ... Hi   Light bleed is always present with LCD, and viewing a black or near black LCD TV you always get light bleed.  It's also very hard to know from a photograph if the light bleed is what is typical or it is really bad.   Some things to try: Make sure your screens brigthness is turned down to match the room brigthness.  If you are in dark room, the brightness needs adjusting down quite a lot.  LCD TVs are not designed for viewing in pitch black or near blackness as they are not trying to be a cinema screen and can't be, they work differently.  Most people in the know have whats called ambiant lighting or bias lighting when watching TV, for example a light is placed behind the screen and you don't watch in near darkness See https://lifehacker.com/why-bias-lighting-increases-your-tvs-contrast-and-saves-1695117890 for some info.   Also make sure your picture settings are in the Natural or Movie mode (well movie mode will probably give you white flashes such is Samsung rubbish software) and knock down the contrast a little.     Note the white flashing is a bug in Samsungs firmware and picture processing, a new screen or One box will not fix it, usually though it seems to only be when using Movie mode.   Just don't buy a Samsung TV again, I certainly will not.   Hope that helps.   Phil             ... Hi   Some things that might have happened:    1) The power outage has physically destroyed the TV.  This can happen because suddenly everything turning off all at same time can cause a spike due to back EMF, or the power was cut because of a power surge.  Check the fuses, and make sure the power outlet is still working by plugging something else into it, otherwise it needs repairing. 2) The sudden removal of power has corrupted something in the TVs non-volatile memory, similar to just yanking the plug from the wall powering a computer, if the TV was writing something to memory at the time the sudden power loss stops it halway and it can cause errors when the TV tries to start back up.   If there is an override method to reset the TV to factory defaults this will often resolve the problem.  Sometimes complex electronic products have a reset pin you can push with a paper clip as you power on to trigger a factory reset.  Not sure about Samsung TVs.  If you can't factory reset it then a replacement motherboard/circuit board might be required, or a technician might be able to reprogram the board. 3) The power cut didn't cause the problem, and you would have found the same thing if you had turned the TV off at the mains for any reason.  Electronics can go bad or components become borderline, which can mean they continue okay until power is removed.  A repair will be required.   Regards   Phil ... Hi   Samsung block downgrading the firmware simply so they can remove things or start pushing adverts and we have no choice to undo by going back to a previous firmware.   There is no technical reason why the firmware can't be flashed to an older version, the TV doesn't know or care what version the firmware is, but Samsung have coded the firmware so that if the flashing firmware version is less than the current firmware version it blocks it.   My first Samsung made TV is my last one and I simply will never buy another Samsung product.       ... Hi   I've got the lasted 1240 firmware now on my Q7F TV and switched back to movie mode to test for flashes in the thin hope it might be fixed.   Anyway couldn't watch it in that mode as the posterisation over peoples faces made it look like they were made of plastic, with highlights completely blown out, and when others in the family mention it straight away I know it's not my imagination or me being fussy.  So we switched back to Natural mode  that doesn't have this issue.  It might be some other settings like contrast need turning down when in Movie mode, but as that mode is suppose to be set up pretty good out the box and hasn't been adjusted, it shouldn't have this obvious issue.  So looks like more bugs introduced than fixed, what a surprise.   Samsung, your TVs and quality control is truely shocking, you deserve your TV sales dropping like a stone.  Where is the beta testing, calibration checks, and release notes on your firmware so we can identify what change may have broken something to feed back constructively.   Tumble weed passes.....   My first 4K TV is a Samsung, never again.   Regards    Phil ... Hi   A lot of manufacturers selling their goods in the UK just farm their support out to the cheapest company they can find, so quality is poor, customer service is poor, and repair quality is ofen poor.  We had similar issue getting an LG washing machine repaired.      The repair companies don't get paid enough by the manufacturers to actually make it profitable to repair anything, and given Samsungs overal quality on their products generally I'm not surprised Samsung have gone for the cheapest.   Your best bet, in the UK anyway, is to go directly back to the retailer, it's them that has to organise the repair, not us.  If the engineers don't turn up or repairs fail to fix the problem you can get a replacement product or refund.  It's called the consumer rights act https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/what-do-i-do-if-i-have-a-faulty-product.     Never use the warranty service unless the retailer has gone bust and you didn't buy with a credit card, as you have fewer legal rights.   Regards   Phil     ... Hi We are still using Natural Mode but with contrast settings tamed down in picture settings so it appears as close to the more correctly calibrated Movie Mode, and not had a white flash since. We don't see any contrast changes on our Q7F in Natural mode, and it matches quite closely Movie Mode except the colours are a bit more processed and more punchy than they should be. I don't expect these flashing problems to ever be fixed, it's likely hardware bugs in their own designed chips which they have no choice but to continue to use as it's too costly to fix. Hi   The problem with turning off Auto Motion Plus settings is that the negatives of sample and hold displays, that of reduced resolution when things move on the screen (due to their sample and hold nature), is very apparent, and the effect is worse for 4K material.    Some people may not notice or sit so far away from the screen they might as well just have bought a bog-standard HD TV, but for a lot of people there is little point in upgrading to 4K if this setting is just turned off.   Yes these settings which add extra frames by interpolation can introduce artefacts, but they shouldn't introduce judder that wasn't there in the first place, this judder is caused by dropped frames, which is a bug or lack of processing power.   All other manufacturers seem to manage having this feature without dropped frames, but Samsung can't.     I believe the problem is Samsung have designed their own silicon for their TVs which is basically broken or underpowered, and these chips continue to appear in their TVs over the last several years, probably because they have a huge inventory they don't want to scrap due to cost.   Typically, other manufacturers buy in the system chips from companies that know what they are doing, meaning they free to change to other suppliers should their be problems.   Avoid Samsung TVs at all costs, they don't support them and they are as buggy as anything, the only thing Samsung are good at is using their TVs to advertise and annoy.   Regards   Phil ... Hi   Buggy software.   A bit about soap opera effect, it is where films at 24 frames per second (which is bordering on the minimum frame rate that fools us into seeing motion) is digitally enhanced up to 48 or 96 frames per second.  This results in one of the characteristics of films, the slow frame rate, and the aesthetics that produces, being removed, so it looks more like it was filmed on video, i.e. it's like a soap opera.  The interesting thing is, in surveys and tests it is found that younger people who have grown up with YouTube and videos, prefer the higher frame rate or soap opera effect when watching films, but older people, remembering back to watching films at "the flicks", prefer the slower original frame rate.  There is nothing wrong with the soap opera effect on films, if anything they are more realistic to watch, unless of course you are film enthusiast who wants to recreate every nuance of going to the cinema in their own home, flickery frame rates and all.   Eventually all films will be in 60 or even 120 frames per second (so all like a 'Soap opera'), rather than flickery 24 fps, because that is more realistic and allows us to see the full resolution on anything moving on large screens, without doing this there is little point in going to say 8K.  The only thing stopping this from happening now is cost and technology (and an older generation who think they don't like it), as it's easier to add CGI effects when you have only 24 individual frames a second as opposed to 60 frames or 120 frames per second to process.   The trouble with modern displays is they are sample and hold and the image blurs from our own eyes tracking fast-moving objects that aren't actually moving on the screen as they are a series of static images.  The resolution we perceive drops drastically when something moves on the screen because our eyes are moving, but the object we are following is static for 1/24th or 1/50th of a second.  So blur reduction interpolates and creates extra frames so each individual frame is shown for less time, i.e. doubling the frame rate to 1/100th or 1/120th a second.  It's not perfect as you can get artefacts as the processing can only guess how these new frames might look like.  This is why filming/videoing in say 120 frames per second is on the horizon and some places have it already.   The soap opera effect isn't a negative, and once you get use to watching films that way, it's hard to watch them at their original slow frame-rate.  It's an acquired taste, but after a bit of time the soap opera effect on films makes them more immersive and provides more of that feeling we are watching something through a window onto another world.   Regards   Phil       ... Hi   Samsung TVs are about the worse for motion handling and artefacts, judder can never be completely elminated due to bugs in their processors and software which they have no intention of ever fixing, and you can get a couple of seconds of what seems like a few frames per second, i.e. frames are dropped, the TV quickly has to catch up it seems, giving rise to stutters etc.   You can either return the TV and get one from just about any other manufacturer which will perform without these issues, or keep tweaking until you can find a setting you can live with and just get use to it, then remember never to buy a Samsung TV again.   Regards   Phil     ... Hi   The trouble in turning it off is you immediately get a resolution drop on anything that moves, it is a necessity with displays like LCDs, which is why all LCD TVs have something similar.  If you don't notice this resolution drop then you are lucky or sat too far away from the TV (which probably means you don't need a 4K set).   Turning it off for us isn't an option as the constant blurring of anything that moves is worse than the judders.     Regards   Phil ... Hi   TVs have various issues related to how they are designed or hacked to work with the latest trends or technologies.   LCD TVs need to be slim to compete with OLEDs that can be slimmer as they have no backlight, and we as consumers want thing TVs, plus need to have high contrast ranges and support really bright images for HDR.   To get the contrast on LCDs these days, they split the backlight up into sections, so each section can have a different power of brightness.  For Samsung TVs these tend to be vertical bands.  Straight away this is going to mean you will see some vertical banding on certain types of image, most typically on skies or football pitches.  Basically anything that has a uniform colour where the camera pans allows our eyes and brain to see it.  In addition, making all the filters and dies etc completely uniform across the large surface area of larger TVs we buy now is hard, so you can get some other smudges or variations in brightness across different parts of the screen and this gives rise to somethong often refered to as the dirty screen effect.  Again this is most noticable on panning pictures across areas of solid colour as you've used to photograph.   Now depending on how good the panel is or the how good that batch was, the effects may be more or less obvious in comparison to another one.  Also depending on how you have your brightness and other settings adjusted, can make the issue more or less obvious.  Usually the out of box default settings are the worst as they are set at the "buy me" settings.  Usually the "Movie" or "Professional" picture modes gets you to something more akin to a correctly adjusted TV.   The other issue is more physcological, as looking for the issue and once seen makes it stand out and much more obviously and you can't unsee it.  I've seen TVs with very obvious banding issues and friends can't see it, but once it's pointed out they see it all the time.     Now due to how the back light works on TVs where you have any form of "local dimming" which is all HDR LCD TVs, as they can't be HDR otherwise, then this type of banding or patterning is going to be there to some degree if you look for it hard enough.   Samsung TVs tend to have lots of other nigglying issues as well, usually to do with software, so this might not be your only problem, and their support isn't good.   My suggestion if you haven't already is switch to the Natural or Movie picture mode, this is setup to be much more natural and closer to reality and issues with banding are less noticable.  Always expect to see some banding etc on screens of uniform colour and just live with it if you can.  You will likely always see banding on football matches, it's not an uncommon complaint, again it is a case of living with or trying a different technology.   OLED TVs do not use back lights, so don't have this type of banding, however again making the TV perform uniformily across such a large area also gives rise to complaints about the dirty screen effect, and they don't wear as well, meaning as time goes on the effect can become worse.   Some people go through several TVs before they find one with a panel they find the least problematic.   Regards   Phil           ... Hi   LED clear motion strobes the back light, it's goal is to emulate CRT type displays or plasma displays, which didn't have issues with motion blur due to the way they quickly flashed up each frame then went to black.  It was our brains that held the image due to our persistance of vision and avoided blur.  Modern TVs are sample and hold displays, the frame is shown constantly, so it overrides our persistance of vision.  When something moves on these displays our eyes follow the illusion of something moving, but really they are just a series of static images.  As our eye moves we are bluring these static images, just like taking a picture with a camera panning on a slow shutter speed.   Modern LCD TVs overcome this bluring by creating extra frames, increasing the shutter speed if you like, so the bluring is reduced considerably, but this can give rise to all sorts of odd artefacts, especially around things that are moving.   So some TVs have the option to revert back to black frame insertion like older TVs, but because the backlight is now turning on and off very fast, it essentially generates less light overall, so appears darker, and some people find the flicker annoying and uncomfortable.   Overall Samsung seem to have the most buggy and rough and ready blur reduction capabilities of any TV out there.   Regards   Phil     ... Hi   Yes it was taken down with no explanation from Samsung surprise surprise, who think their customers deserve to know nothing.  We don't know what 1230 had changed as they don't provide any release notes with their firmware updates, not an industry norm, but it is for Samsung.  So without knowing what the firmware changed, we can't guess on why it might have been taken down.  I did read some reports that it broke some smart TV apps, but then most firmware updates from Samsung have broken something.   I updated to 1230 whilst it was available, and not noticed any issues (or fixes either!), and you are correct in that you can't go back to an older version, so if anyone is affected by the problem which meant they took it down, has been stuck with that problem for a while now.   Of course Samsung should have rebuilt firmware version 1221 as version 1231 so it would be accepted by our TVs as a new version and we could put it back on, however Samsung hasn't done that.   Regards   Phil         ...
