I don't know whose idea it was to have a new, separate page to allow/deny each and every single app permission, but it's a royal pain in the ass. The old toggles worked perfectly well and were a lot more simple. Now trying to enable or disable app permissions is just annoying: instead of one direct toggle, there's an entire page for each of them - and what's more, with One UI's penchant for that forced one-handed usage, save/cancel buttons don't even appear at the bottom. It's either the back button at the top, or the back system gesture. In some cases a warning pops up telling you about the "dangers" of the setting you choose, and that offers the options, but that's it. Bring back the toggles please. ... View more

The option for wallpaper motion seems to be completely gone for some reason, at the very least it's no longer there when setting a wallpaper. Why did this have to be removed??   "Wallpaper services", video wallpaper, and slideshow can still only be applied to the lock screen - I'm sorry, but in a world of AOD and biometrics, where so many of us have a setup that completely bypasses the lock screen... WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF THIS??? Furthermore, what exactly is the cause that these features aren't usable on the home screen? Because I honestly can't think of anything that would make sense. Though I'm using an S9+, I'm having this same issue. Adaptive theme is enabled for Samsung Keyboard, and it should "change to a light or a dark theme automatically to fit with the colors of each app screen"... Yet for bright Tumblr IMs I have the dark keyboard, whereas with Discord's and Twitter's dark theme it displays the white one. And it's been doing this forever. Some sort of detection obviously happens in the background before the keyboard itself pops up, because the themes do change... Except, instead of fitting the colors of any given app screen, the keyboard is in contrast with it. It's really annoying. I still say the problem with One UI is that it isn't a natural evolution of Touchwiz / whatever experience they called their UI before. They changed way too many things for the sake of changing them, and much of the actual UI is a more-or-less copy of what Google has on its Pixels - which, recently, have taken to aping apple in more ways than one. A shot in the foot, that nobody really asked for, and that in several aspects goes directly against the hardware itself with all the (half-baked!) focus on one-handed usage on gorgeous big displays. All the whites are murder on the eyes to begin with, and they're even more of a crime on these AMOLEDs. The colour theme is absolutely atrocious, and the icons are just as cringe-worthy: the two really succeed in teaming up to offer a toy phone impression. (And themes don't help it either, not with how half-and-half the icons will become with most any icon pack, or with how live wallpapers only work on the lockscreen that too many of us completely bypass with covers/AOD/biometrics.) And all the empty spaces everywhere that could be occupied with content, you know, the thing these big phones are designed to display as much of at once as possible!... Some of the underlying changes is nice, don't get me wrong. But the "front-end", the actual looks of it that's presented to the user - nope. Heck, it even has multiple fonts across the system, instead of having one.   The real tragedy? All the expert/professional tech sites and forums praising it to high heavens. I also have to reiterate what's been said by others as well as myself, here and elsewhere: it's awful. It's change for the sake of change, which is hardly ever good, this case being no exception. It just feels like Samsung is trying to be apple, and somehow in the process managed to just outright copy much of the UI of Pixels... both of which are just alien to Samsung's own hardware designs, instead of being the next step of natural evolution. The white-offwhite-grey-darkgrey colour scheme with blue pops is an eyesore, especially on a full black device, but I can't imagine it looking any better on others. The icons... dear gods. Kindergarten level, with awful colour choices - just look at what Gallery's was before and what it is now. I genuinely cannot fathom who would come up with this UI and why it would be greenlit. I do like how the rounded corners of the display are reflected in UI elements, like album covers or the notification shade... but that is all the positive I can say about the looks of One UI. ... I've been using Pie/OneUI for about a month now, had purchased the S9+ not two weeks before that. I have to say, my overall first impression has not changed in this time: it feels half-baked and it looks simply bad; to me, Oreo in less than half that time felt more intuitive and came off as more modern.    The awful off-white / light grey / dark grey colour scheme with the blue highlight feels forced, not sure why Samsung felt the need to keep this at all. As an option, it would be fine, but having this as the default system theme is just... weird. More akin to cheap plastic phones of old. I know One is supposed to be an all new skin, but it's more like change for change's sake in this regard, and not at all anything that would be a natural evolution of TW or Samsung Experience. While it may fit the overall design language of the appropriate Pixel generation, it's completely detached from anything of Samsung's. And sadly enough, this alien colour scheme carries on to much of the rest of the UI as well. In contrast to this, the icons are all colourful... yet at the same time, viewed on their own, they're kind of dull, flat and uninteresting, unlike the old ones. This again begs the question: why was the change needed? And again, it's system default, there's no "Oreo" theme to go back to if one so wishes. I'm also not sure what happened to Night Mode's scheduler, from what I heard, it was in the beta, and went poof for the final release. It would be nice to have.   To move on from looks to functionality... While I'm sure many enjoy the gestures, personally I find them to be a nuisance. Which is bad, because the only other option if one doesn't like them is the permanent navigation bar, which is still too thick, still has a light background more often than not, and still cannot be customised at all beyond switching the places of the recents/back buttons. Why did gestures need to replace Oreo's hidden navbar option? Why couldn't they be a third option? The overlay was a perfect compromise of having navigation available when needed and not taking up screen real estate when not needed, easy to access with a simple flick from anywhere from the bottom of the screen without mistakenly moving to home instead of recents or the other way around. What's the point of an infinity display if a part of it has to be permanently sacrificed for the navbar, unless we want the risk of flicking from the wrong spot and getting to recents instead of home (or the other way around)? By the way recent apps: can we please get list view back? Not only is this card view highly inefficient when running multiple apps, the way it automatically slides whatever I just sent to the background to the side and brings a previous app to center is utterly maddening, I still couldn't get used to it, making me switch to apps I don't want all the time. Also, Game Tools are now only available from the status bar if we have hidden gestures enabled - I thought the point of One UI was to make everything easily accessible with a thumb on a giant screen? It's not just this bit that's questionable, by the way, there are more than enough lists that start at the top of the screen, never reaching the bottom of it (so there's not a whole lot of items to scroll through) - yet at the same time, other elements like progress indicators have moved all the way to the absolute bottom of the screen? Why?   In addition to all this, Bixby is still here. It's still here and it's still bad, and now the button can't even be switched off, because the only option we get is to pick whether we want to open it with one or two key presses? For the love everything, stop forcing such subpar service onto people, especially on your most expensive, most premium devices. It's practically the epitome of user unfriendliness.    All in all, I'm not convinced. One or two details, the aims and goals of One UI are noble enough, but the execution seems to have fallen short and in my opinion ended up being more of an overhaul that simply wasn't needed and is not at home on what constitutes Samsung's own hardware design.
