Sounds like it wasn't the right product for you, @holdensredhat, so paul1111's advice would be best - and I hope that you've now got something that's more what you're wanting. 
However, for anyone unable to exchange their TV and wondering about this one, it's worth having a look into any third-party adaptors out there (e.g. for a Digital Optical to Analog Stereo Audio Converter with 3.5 mm jack if you've got wired headphones; or for a Optical Digital Audio Out to Bluetooth Transmitter for Bluetooth ones.)
