It has been a standard procedure to put subtitles on the bottom of the screen. But doing so, you divert most of the eye vision area to the bottom, and the viewer cannot really see the picture above.
By putting the subtitles on top of the screen, the viewer would be able to read the subtitles while following the picture on the bottom because most of the viewer eye field of vision will be on the bottom of his/her eyes.
