I need to extend my tv's memory with an external hard drive as it can not update and I can not download any new apps. I've Google searched it but I'm confused with what I actually need and what will be sufficient. My tv model number is UE43TU7020.

You can't add more memory to your TV, sorry. Connecting an HDD is designed for media, only.

You are better off buying a Google Chromecast with 4k Google TV in-built.
