Hi, I have just purchased a small tv for my bedroom but I can’t seem to find any terrestrial channels. I bought a small portable aerial and connected them carried out a scan but still nothing. Is there a freeview app I need to download first?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I might be completely wrong here as I know nothing about TVs but isn't the terrestrial channels the old version? End of life system? TV channels go through digital now? Your TV may need to be connected to a Freeview box if it's a older model TV?

The Freeview system is called digital terrestrial https://www.freeview.co.uk/about-freeview  All modern models will have freeview built in , no you do not need an app, channels found by scanning. which model do you have? Sometimes there can be issues with indoors aerials though, a look at the best ones here. https://www.cordbusters.co.uk/best-indoor-aerial-freeview-tv/

Check if there are any problems with Freeview in your area https://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/problems-freeview-reception/#/Freeview other options are to try the Automatic scan again. Some customers have found that scanning after removing the aerial and then reinserting provides a solution when channels are missing and your manual tune may be accessible. In other words scan with the aerial removed when obviously no channels will be found, however this can reset the connection. You would then need to scan with the aerial connected again and see if this makes a difference.

I'm guessing your TV is not a smart TV? Does it have WiFi built-in?

Connect it to WiFi and do you have any apps on the TV?

It is connected to WiFi and I do have bbc iPlayer / itv hub etc. I also connected a portable aerial thinking this would show bbc1 /2 / itv and channel 4 etc but it doesn’t. I tried to update the channels but it is still the same

Roof mounted aerials still work best, if you are using an indoor aerial mount it near the window and a use an aerial with a built-in signal booster. It's all dependent on where you live and how built up it is around your home.
