Sound malfunctioning

I'm having problems with the sound. When using the smart apps the sound works normal when playing from tv. However, when I switch the sound to come from my receiver, it is very choppy and the sound pauses frequently. The picture continues to play without issue. It's only the sound. 


what I've tried: reset tv, reset sound setting, reset the smart hub, and turned off receiver 

 


Tv: samsung q80

receiver: Yamaha rx-v2085

Connection: connection via digital audio extender. This is done because I have the receiver in a different location as the tv
