It will only work if the connected device supports the same bit rate and the cable is not damaged. Digital optical audio cables are all or nothing with regards signal transmission. Also, some don't always fit too well due to the thickness of the hand grip above the plug. Amazon basics cables seem the most universal in that sense from experience. Like with HDMI, also make sure the cable is plugged in only when both devices are turned off.
