Samsung QLED, 49Q7F - HDMI CEC input always auto-names "Home Theatre"

Hi there,

I have a new QLED, 49Q7F and have the ARC HDMI input connected up to an HDMI matrix with an optical output on it. Connected to this switch I have my Sky+HD box, BluRay player, Amazon Fire etc. connected.

The Samsung TV recognises this as a 'Home Theatre' and names the input Home Theatre and puts the home theatre icon on the input.

Now, I'd like to simply change the name of this input and the icon to be 'Sky' as this makes it far easier for my family to understand that this is the Sky input. I can go in and change the name and icon to be a cable box and named sky and this all works.

However.....whenever I turn the TV off and back on again, it has now gone and changed the name of the input back to 'Home Theatre' and the icon back to the home theatre icon. I can't get it to hold the manually set name and icon that I enter for this input ???

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Roy.

Hi @roydonaldson. :robothappy:

Our TV product specialist has advised me that the HDMI Matrix may be confusing the TV – especially in terms of recognising the input when the Matrix switches to another one. They've added that it's not possible to turn off the auto detection of the TV or fix it to a user defined name.

If you're able to, it’d be worth testing the connected devices through a direct connection with the One Connect box to see if any of the issues you’ve come across (like those in your other threads here and here) are replicated in that setup.

Hi there,

I've done some further testing of this and I would suggest that the input detection and naming in the TV is a bit on the broken side. A HDMI Matrix is a valid componant in a HDMI system and you can see this if you refer to the HDMI-CEC spec: https://github.com/floe/CEC/blob/master/extras/CEC_Specs.pdf

I had HDMI-CEC turned off on the Sky box during all my past testing and this seems to confuse the TV. I turned HDMI-CEC on on the Sky box and now the TV recognises the Sky box as 'SKY'. However, this displays a cable box icon and not the Sky icon on the input. If I go back in and edit the input labl from 'SKY' to 'Sky', the TV now shows the Sky icon on the input. If I turn the TV off and on again, it then re-detects the Sky box and renames the input 'SKY' so removing the Sky logo from the input.

If I do all of the above, however, now go back in and turn HDMI-CEC off on the Sky box before power cycling the TV, when I then power cycle the TV, the Sky icon now stays on the input label on the Menu, but shows as a cable box on the Inputs menu.

So, in all I'd say not that great a behaviour and probably pretty hard for your normal TV user to work out.

I'd suggest worth getting someone to look over this in a bit more details.

Roy.

For my other 2 threads you reference. I guess the Sky Austria one is the TV mis-interpretating the HDMI-CEC messages when there is a Matrix there and the Sky box HDMI-CEC is turned off. And for the ARC DTS sound one, that is a completely seperate issue that needs advice on.

Thanks,

Roy.
