Playing AVI format in Samsung UE50RU7400UXSQ

Hello, 

I have Samsung UE50RU7400UXSQ . When I try to play an .avi video file , it says "unsupported format".

How come such a "smart" tv doesn't support a popular video format? Is there any way to have the TV support it ?

I bought the 8 series just yesterday and you can't imagine my frustration. I've got my old shows on a 4TB HDD in AVI and my new "smart" TV won't play them! So my upgrade was actually a downgrade. The only advantage of me wasting 530e was to have a bit thinner TV! So disappointed!
