So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II  HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

...

Moderator edit: Original thread title was "Blue Planet 2 HLG - No Samsung". With the OP's permission, the title was changed on 12/03/2018 to accurately reflect the dominant theme of the thread as it has progressed. If the reader would like to know more about the HLG format, please check out the BBC's page and FAQ's on it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/high-dynamic-range Thank you, AntS.

I've just streamed a HLG file from my NAS to my KS9500 UK and it played great in HLG\HDR.

I don't know if that helps anyone?

Will give it a go, wish Samsung would supply some samples HLG samples and if they work then great. Bit worried as the sample says HDR/HLG, so how do you know if it is actually playinh HLG?

No the sample proves nothing as it is coming up as HDR not HLG. Need a HLG sample.

No proves nothing as it shows playing HDR sample not HLG. As I said we need a HLG sample only from Samsung and until we have one how can we be certain the TV supports HLG as Samsung says.

I don't always believe what Samsung say, and like things confirmed. They released a message on these forums saying the 2016 UHD TV's did support HLG so prove it with a sample please. They have UHD and HDR samples, so giving us a HLG sample should not be to difficult. That will put all our minds at rest.

HLG is a version of HDR. Every file HLG file I've tried worked.

If you have a KS tv, you take it back because samsung never brought out the smartthings extend.

HLG is a different tech than HDR10. When Intried the sample it showedn on the TV as HDR. You say you have just HLG samples, could you tell me the link to them so I can try. Not HDR/HGL samples but pure HGL.

Thanks

I my be a bit cynical but it is possible to take a HDR10 sample and rename it to HDR HLG because you know it will show a HDR picture and there fore say the TV will play HLG. That is why I want a sample where the TV says its getting a HLG source not HDR as I get with all the samples, because how can I be sure the HLG update is actually working. Just because Samsung says so?

I just tried them from my nas and no HDR or HLG. But they play in HLG on a OLED TV.

HLG is not the same tech as HDR and I will try to explain. The idea is for any HLG broadcast to work on any HD tv, which makes it far more attractive to broadcasters, because existing TV's will still work as normal with a HLG broadcast. For HDR you must have a HDR capable TV and non HDR TV's are not able to show HDR formatted broadcasts, as HLG will.

As I said my son has a Panasonic HDR and HLG capable TV. When he watched the Iplayer Planet Earth 2 he told me that the info showed it was in HLG. I asked him to play that sample showed on these forums, and he told me it was showing as HDR not HLG.

They are totally different in the way they work, just as Dolby Vision is different than HDR. On a LG TV the set will tell you which version your are watching, HDR, Dolby Vision, or HLG. This is why I want a pure HLG sample, which is why it is so odd that it can not play the only sample that I know of, which was the Planet Earth 2 on Iplayer. If Panasonic and LG, can do it, why not Samsung. Again just like the Samsung JS models we were told was fully HDR capable and would support HDR10. The first broadcaster of HDR10 was Netflix (Marco Polo), and guess what, it did not support it. Samsung at first blamed Netflix, then they tried to say the TV was never HDR capable (funny it did play HDR samples and Amazon Prime). It was Netflix that told me that the JS models were not compatible, and could not be software updated. They fixed it with the KS models. That is why I take what Samsung say carefully as they have lied to me in the past and tried to blame everyone else. I got a full refund from Curry's for mis selling. Thing is the actual TV's are very good but their support needs serious work, and they must keep promises made about capabilities and updates. They also have the law behind them as it is the retailer who has to refund you not the manufacturer so they can say what they want and leave the mess to their retailers (Curries were a bit annoyed with Samsung as they were also given the run around).

Hi

I'm sure I've already linked to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgrX-lcGcVg where you have a link on the page to download the original file, or search the net for "GH5 HLG download sample" to search for others.  The Panasonic GH5 camera only records using HLG for HDR footage, and if you want to check the file is an HLG file from a Panasonic GH5 then search the net for a program called "MediaInfo" which allows you to right click on any media file on your PC and read all about it.

HDR is now a generic term that we call any content that has larger dynamic range than standard TV.  HLG, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR are just different ways to record the extra dynamic range, but it's all HDR.

Edit, more footage http://demo-uhd3d.com

Yes  HDR covers all formats, but their are different versions (HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, and maybe HDR10 plus Samsungs own), are different because the different versions work differently and do not work on all TV's. That is why the Samsung does not support Dolby Vision, unlike the LG. I knew that when I bought the TV, but I was informed that it would be supporting HLG last year. HLG will work on both 709 (little bit darker) and 2020 (up ton11 stops) so any TV can receive HLG. That is why broadcasters like this standard. So on a normal standard you will not see much difference but a HDR TV should deliver the bright HDR pictures. This means broadcasters only need one signal for all to receive, as long as the TV has the free software to run it, and that is the issue. I have tried the HLG samples on youtube  do not give a HDR image.
