2020 QLED T models (Q80T, Q90T, Q800T, Q900T) HDR game mode brightness / local dimming bug

I bought a Q80T a couple of days ago and have noticed a really annoying issue when using the tv with the combination of HDR and game mode.

I'm fairly certain this is a software bug in the TV since I can reproduce this issue with 100% accuracy, and it happens on the dot at the same moment every time. It's basically on a timer.

Basically when the game is displaying a HDR signal and game mode is enabled, exactly after 6 minutes the brightness of the TV suddenly drops by around 20 (50 -> 30). The value of brightness setting doesn't actually change however. Messing with the brightness setting does not restore the brightness to it's original state, but changing the local dimming setting from standard to low and then back to standard does. Switching game mode off and then back on also fixes the issue, but then it happens again EXACTLY after 6 minutes (I've timed this with a stopwatch).

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Or can someone maybe test this on their TV to see if you can reproduce it?

Exact repro steps on how I can reproduce this 100% of the time on the PS4 Pro:

  1. Set brightness to max (50)
  2. Set local dimming to standard (bug happens on high as well)
  3. Enable game mode
  4. Turn off game motion plus
  5. Turn off intelligent mode and all the brightness related settings in eco settings, as these can influence the brightness level of the tv.
  6. Launch a game that runs in HDR
  7. Start your stopwatch
  8. Do whatever you want in the game or you can also go back to PS4 menus, find a bright scene where you can notice a brightness drop easily
  9. When the stopwatch hits 6 minutes, you should see the TVs brightness suddenly drop by a large amount. By eye the brightness drop seems about equal to dropping the brightness from 50 -> 30 by hand.
  10. Go to picture settings and set local dimming to low (brightness does not change)
  11. Set local dimming back to standard (brightness suddenly jumps to the original level. Brightness can be restored by switching input away and back as well, or by disabling and re-enabling game mode)
  12. And again after EXACTLY 6 minutes the bug again repeats and the brightness drops down again

Some other notes: The PS4 has a screensaver that basically dims the screen if it is idle for a while. This is not the cause of this, this happens even when the console is in active use and the brightness can be restored temporarily by changing the local dimming setting like described above. I have not managed to reproduce this issue with game mode off, so it seems to be related to game mode.

Software version: 1304

This worked for me thanks!

I also noticed the annoying bug.

It's not just in HDR contents but SDR as well.

In game mode even with all the Eco features turned off, after a while local dimming internally resets to low causing an obvious drop in brightness.

Can't swear about this because maybe I didn't put enough attention but I have the impression that this bug was introduced with a recent firmware update, it didn't happen when I bought the TV in late June.

BTW your suggested fix seems to work (turning off and on again the TV by keeping the power button pressed on the remote controller), it's quick and non invasive in the meantime that Samsung bothers to fix this hopefully not introducing new bugs 😕

I keep hearing this too. That it’s not a known issue but HOW? It’s the top thread on this forum and @AntS told me he personally brought it up with them... this is so tiring.

I’ve asked the mod to check this. Surely they are aware of it by now? So many of us reporting it and it being discussed so widely on here... Samsung support are absolutely awful.

I really hate that the next logical step is for whoever had the conversation with the Samsung engineer....you need to blast that on *all* of their social media platforms. If they publicly have someone outing one of THEIR engineers for acknowledging the problem then they can only publicly say we are fixing it. Then if it’s not fixed quickly we can post that they as a company acknowledged a problem with one of their TVs and are refusing to fix it.

I hate that that’s the only thing I can even remotely think of doing next. Contacting the mods, their support, their social media has yielded no fix. It’s time they publicly acknowledge the problem and either say they’re fixing it or not. If not, I’ll return it and go elsewhere. The sad thing is I really like this tv.

The best way is everybody who came here all need to create separate topic with model number with game-mode sdr hdr dimming bug. If we flood topics with same issue/bug then they will definitely look into this. Talking under one topic is useless they never going to read one by one

@Suriya , Nope. That's the exact opposite way that Community works. By flooding the board like that it will in fact make our job of conveying/reporting your views to our colleagues more difficult.

I’m in no way trying to be rude, but, with the top thread sitting at 50k views and 400 replies, flooding the board like he said should not be the one post you rely to. Why is Samsung not being transparent about this? Why haven’t we been told if there’s a fix in the works or not? It’s obviously an actual problem and affecting A LOT of people or it wouldn’t be the top thread on this board for weeks/months.

I’m not going to flood the board with posts, but even that would be a good thing. Because then you’d have it fix it. Your production on other areas of your job would go down. Your supervisor would ask hey, what’s going on? Then you could say I’m having to delete all these threads about this problem that has STILL not been addressed by Samsung. I’m telling you, the guy who has the email chain with the engineer needs to put him and Samsung on blast. Flood their Twitter, Facebook, etc. and ask why this engineer at Samsung knows of this problem, but for some reason they’re not going to fix it.
