On the newer models, you can find the serial number on the side of your TV. See this page for more information: http://www.samsung.com/sa_en/support/skp/faq/430813.

Regarding the software update - I'm assuming you're asking about the firmware? You can check for updates in the menu. Different models have different menus, so should you need specific instructions, please let us know your TV model and we'll try to provide assistance. Do note that there might not be an update available for your TV.
