Yo! I have bought Samsung X5 External SSD 1TB with a Thunderbolt 3 connection, but for some reason, I can not use it with my HP Elitebook 840 G5 even if it has a USB-c port with the Thunderbolt lightning symbol. Can someone tell me if I need an adapter to be able to use it?

In what way can't you use it? Also keep in mind some laptops manufacturers may limit their USB c ports to specific features. So if your SSD drive does not appear when connecting to that port. Then HP has made So that port only works for external displays and GPU's but not for file transfer.

It register so I had the opportunity to unplug it, but it did not show up as a usable disk. Someone suggested that I could hold the power button for 30 seconds and that fixed it, but I still have to do it again from time to time, so far. I do not know if it is a permanent fix or only temporary.
