If I buy a telephone from Samsung am I able to use any sim in it - specifically virgin mobile sims?

You should have no issues as long as the sim is the right size. Nowadays most aims are multi form and you pop it out at the right size.

Phones from Samsung are unlocked and open to networks.
So Virgin should work ok
