Lost phone and security

Recently lost my phone and there's no realistic way of me getting it back. Is there a way to permanently delete everything on it remotely via google or Samsung?

Yes go to google find my phone log in with your google account and you should be able to wipe it clear

Would this get rid of all whatsapp messages, images and anything downloaded on the phone?

Providing it is turned on, then everything will be wiped. You could also get the provider to block the IME number so the phone can not be used
