getting the error message "unfortunately email has stopped"
tried re doing email account, clearing down cache, etc

May I ask which email app your using ?
If the stock email app then as a process of elimination can you perhaps try a 3rd party one ?
You could try clearing the system cache by turning off the phone and then follow a set of button pressess that takes you into the phone file system.
As a last resort create a back up and factory reset.
