I can't send or receive text messages unless my Internet connection is on, does anyone know how to resolve this please

Mobile data has to be in to send/receive sms. Its not a requirement for RCS though.

hi, is this a new thing for phones as my old phone, a Samsung a5 didn't need this. also what does rcs mean? thank you

It depends where you are located, for the UK, this has always been the case. RCS is an option which allows messaging over WiFi and sending large files etc. See https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=HNmUxDkDshk

@rick36: For clarity, a Mobile Data connection is required for messages that exceed 150 characters, or contain images or emojis, as these will convert to MMS format.
