Message notification sounds

Hi, I'm new to Samsung and I'm not sure if this is a fault or just a Samsung thing so here goes. 

Ifsomeone texts me when I'm already in their conversation there is no notification sound but get the sound otherwise, is this normal?

It's a Galaxy S8

Yes it's normal and it's the same on my A3 2017, I think it's because we're already in the conversation so in theory we should see the message so no notification required.

But it would be nice if we can change the setting to still notify even if we're on our thread/conversation.
