galaxy S7 edge storage question

Hello, 

I have just moved from my old Galaxy edge 7 to a new one. On my old phone, in device maintenance it said that my applications took up 16gig of storage.

On my new phone the same apps are only taking up 5.3 gig of storage.

Does anyone know why that has happened?

Is it something to do with caches? If so, what is the best way to clear all that storage space on the old phone?

Any help gratefully received

Apps use storage. When you start using a new device and install an app, then it doesn't automatically get the data from the old device. That's the reason for your observation.

As to the question what to do with the old device : do you want to give it away ? Then do a factory reset, that way all data will be cleared. Or do you want to use it yourself ? Then there's no need to delete any data.

I would like to keep the old phone but free up some of the storage.

How do I do that?

Is it a case of a factory reset and then reinstall the apps?

You could do that with a factory reset, that would be an easy and thorough method.

Or you could deinstall the apps that you don't use and clean up others : 

Settings > Apps > [my app] > Storage > [delete cache | delete storage]

Cache doesn't store important data, only improves the performance.
