HI All

new to this board and couldn't find a category for S8 phones so not sure if this is the correct area. My problem at the moment is that my camera does not work since i have denied permission to the microphone. I don't need the microphone turned on when I'm taking photos. Does anyone know how I can continue to use the camera but still have microphone turned off?

thanks in advance

abby

Hi @abbygabby

The microphone is required to capture videos, which is accessible via the camera app, so this might explain why your access is restricted when the mic is off. Are you using the stock camera application or a third party app? What did you use to deny the camera access to the microphone, as I wasn't aware that this was possible from the settings?

Hi AndrewL thanks for getting back to me.

I'm using the stock camera application, i turned off microphone by going to apps>camera>permissions

also wouldn't need microphone in video

im deaf so audio or a microphone is not useful to me

No problem, @abbygabby. I've had a look into this for you and can see that the Camera will not allow access to the app without permission to use the microphone. We understand that it is not ideal given your circumstances however it will be necessary to reinstate the microphone permission via Settings > Apps > Camera > Permissions in order to use the Camera app. I will pass your feedback on to our R&D guys in the meantime as it seems to be an odd option to include, given how restrictive it is.

Hi AndrewL

thanks again. This is disappointing. Makes me uncomfortable knowing that the microphone is on when im taking photos. I may need to change phone but thank you for your help.

Don't worry about that, @abbygabby. When capturing photos the phone would only listen out for voice activated prompts, accessible by hitting the cog symbol while the app is open and selecting 'Voice Control'. With this option disabled/greyed out the phone will not listen to you, and the mic will only be active when recording videos.

Hi Andrew,

Any update on when this will be fixed.

I should be the one to decide if I need it on or not.

The problem is still there.

Also I would suggest to ask permission only when it really need (once i starting video record) and describe why this permission is required. Also the application shouldnt crash if permission is not granted, if I disallow to use micro just record video without sound.

Hi Andrew,

Same problem with Note 20 Ultra 5G after a recent  update (17Apr21). Prior to this was using camera with Mic and Location denied with no problem.

I also lost the ability to add pics and multimedia to texts; had to send 3-4 lines of text only or wouldn't send. Finally found info on Google how to reset my Network APN and related info. Due to this-I did not accept the calendar update as it is my brain when I need reinforcement.

I agree, I have no audio limitations but do not want mic or location on in order to use camera. When taking video I would rather decide to turn on mic if I need/desire. Never want location for pics or video--if so I can add with available functions.

These should be options, not restrictions to use.

What is needed is the ability to crop photos (other than when setting contacts).

Have not accepted latest config update; Leary of restrictive changes or wiping of any 'set info' by this update. Searching for info re-"what is in new update".

Thank you for your time, and relaying customer comments.

This is a bunch of bs and big fail! There is no reason why we should not have the choice to allow mic access or not just to take picture ! And even in the event that we are taking a video maybe we don't want or need sound on that video. You mean to tell me that as smart as you guys are you couldn't figure out how to program the app so that we have choice weather or not to have the mic active? I think you did this on purpose maybe to listen in for analytics and marketing which is exactly why I don't want my mic accessed !
