I've had my s8 since launch and it's been fine.
That said I have a film type Samsung Screen Protector on mine and a Rhinoshield bumper.
It's better to be safe than sorry in case of a bump or fall.
You could ask a Samsung service location to give you a quote for replacement or check out any insurance policies or if the screen damage isn't too bad then perhaps use a tempered glass screen protector to both hide the damage and stop it hopefully spreading.
