Every year since 1974, the United Nations has celebrated World Environment Day on 5 June. The aim of Environment Day is to raise awareness of how important it is to protect the environment and to encourage people to take action – and never has this been more important than right now! Each year, the UN chooses a different theme for Environment Day, from green cities and plastic pollution to melting ice caps and food waste.

All over the world, ecosystems are in danger: every three seconds, the world loses the equivalent of one football pitch’s worth of forest; as much as 50% of our coral reefs have already been lost. This is why this year’s Environment day is focusing on ecosystem restoration. So, what exactly is ecosystem restoration? It’s a way of preventing further damage and undoing the damage that has already been done.

This means repairing billions of hectares of damaged land. It means bringing back endangered animals. But it also means small actions that we can all take in our daily lives: planting trees, cleaning up parks and cutting down on waste.

Here at the Community, we wanted to give you a few ideas of ways you can reduce your impact on the environment and do your little bit to help create a more sustainable lifestyle.

Reduce your energy use

Reducing the amount of electricity that you use is one of the best things you can do to reduce your impact on the world: as well as reducing the amount of natural resources needed for generating electricity, you’ll be helping to reduce pollution.

But, uh oh, you’re halfway to work and you’ve just realised you’ve left the living room light on! With Samsung SmartThings, you don’t need to worry: you can use the app to program your smart lights to switch off when you leave the house! You can also check what appliances are running at home and switch them off if you’re not using them, all from the SmartThings app!

Reduce how much water you use

Water is one of the most important natural resources on the planet. In fact, no ecosystem can survive without it. That’s why it’s so important to make sure we only use our fair share. According to Alliance for Water Efficiency, an NGO dedicated to the sustainable use of water, standard washing machines use 151 litres of water in every load. That’s a lot of water!

One way to cut down on how much water you consume is by switching to a more efficient washing machine. Samsung washing machines use about 39 to 53 litres per wash, which is a huge saving! More efficient washing machines also wash clothes at lower temperatures, which helps to save on energy too.

Reduce how much food you throw away

According to the UN, about one third of all food production is thrown away. You read that right: one third! Given how much of the earth is taken up by farmland, all that wasted food has a huge impact on ecosystems around the world. According to Samsung research, one factor that contributes to this waste is that a lot of people don’t know the best place to store their food: in the cupboard? In the fridge? And what’s the best part of the fridge to use? Because of this, a lot of food goes off too quickly and has to be thrown away.

That’s why Samsung has created a handy guide on how best to store your food. The coldest part of your fridge is the bottom. This part should be reserved for items that spoil easily, like fresh meat and fish. Things that don’t require low temperatures like eggs and condiments can be stored in the door. With fruit and vegetables, humidity is as important as temperature, so they’re best stored in a fridge that has adjustable humidity-controlled storage drawers so that you can maintain the best conditions for them.

With just a few small actions, we can all do our part to help recover ecosystems and help keep the environment clean!
