What is the tracking of active time based on?

I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me what the galaxy watch 5 bases it's measurement of "active time" on.

Yesterday I walked over 20'000 steps over the course of 11 hours. Including one short walk with my dog but also a hectic seven hour work shift. I burned, according to samsung health, 841 kcal. I walked just over 16 km.

Yet the watch has only counted 223 minutes of active time. I'm wondering what this is based on? I feel like I've been active for more than 223 minutes.

Hello, if I remember correctly, the watch measures activity thru the pulse, if you exert yourself the pulse increases, then it records active time.

that means the time you are in active form to ensure burn of calories by running or walking

Thank you for your reply! This makes sense.

I would have liked it to measure a wider range I guess. Since it doesn't count stress when I'm moving around at work (and feeling stressed) I would have at least liked for it to count me as active.

Is there a chance that this also ties in with the delay in autodetecting a workout? For example if I take my dog out for a walk it often doesn't start tracking until 10 or 15 minutes in.

This would explain why some of my walks, like to and from the nearby supermarket, don't get tracked at all. Or why some of my longer walks last according to samsung for a much shorter time than they actually took. I might be out and about for an hour but it says the walk took 27 minutes etc.

Yes exactly, it's because the watch notices your heart rate increase and then activates a workout. my tip is that if you know you are going to go out for a long walk or similar, that you then start a workout manually instead of waiting for the clock to start it automatic. You can make a card so you can easily start a walk manually. I always start manually to get the most accurate measurements possible

This is one area the Apple Watch is better - it detects an activity after 7 or 8 minutes, but back dates it to the start of the activity, and so records the whole activity.
