sd card no longer working

After the latest update my phone popped up with "can't write to sd card - your sd card isn't working correctly and has been set to read only ....."

I have unmounted and remounted it. Turned phone off and on and restarted. Still having issue. 

I want to exhaust other options before considering a factory reset. 

Has anyone else come across this and or have a solution?

I've cone across in the past where a person has updated their phone's software while leaving the sd card in the phone which can then present issues.

Are you able to try your sd card in another phone and another sd card in your phone as a process of elimination  ?
