That is what you should check your updates for messages in. You may have already had it and havent realised or its a steady roll out, I'm not sure. But the rest of my post should point you in the direction if the update is on your phone already.
This is the latest version I have. If yours is the same you should be abke to asign notification tones to each thread.
Regards Tango.

Galaxy S9 SeriesThere is an another option if you dont have update for app yet. Download and install apk manually from Apkmirror. Just download the newest one and give it a try. It works for me on S7/S7 Edge, S8/S8+ and also S9/S9+. Let me know if it helps. Regards.
Edit: ON S8 4.4.30.5 works aswell.

@bdlee wrote:Yes, it is under the Contacts. I have an S7 and understand that they will quit updating older equipment, but what I will not accept is the fact that they didn't just stop updating, they actually TOOK AWAY a feature. A feature that to many people is a good thing, just to make you upgrade. If Samsung is reading these posts, I DARE YOU TO TELL ME DIFFERENTLY.
They don't respond to direct questions concerning this. Again, they just don't care.

Galaxy S9 SeriesToo many others who purchased LG phones and offered report no problems. Total BS! From the president no less. Just goes to show the truth of the matter.

Galaxy S9 SeriesYou people better be careful. I complained, wrote a nice long post concerning the need for this feature to be returned. The next day I checked and that post and several others had been deleted. And before you ask there was no profanity, no anger, no threats. It was a simple explanation of why their "feature" didn't work. And I got censured.

Galaxy S9 SeriesHi @BigBrad . I looked into this for you. Turns out you guys were responding to a spam-link user account (https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/1548913) in the relevant posts - and your posts were removed along with theirs. I'm happy to restore your posts - but unsure if they'd still make sense out of their original context. Let me know what you'd prefer either way.

Actually, you can do whatever you would like. This is my first time back since my posts were deleted for no reason I guess other than offending someone at Samsung. Restore them or delete them. No concern to me anymore.

Strongest statement is refusing to purchase another Samsung product. Period. They've shown they don't care. Why should you reward poor service.

THIS IS RESOLVED IN THE LATEST S9 ANDROID PIE UPDATE. YOU CAN ONCE AGAIN HAVE A SPECIFIC NOTIFICATION TONE FOR TEXTS FROM A SPECIFIC CONTACT!
Gee, I love doing this... NO, IT WASN'T FIXED IN THE LATEST UPDATE! See? Now you know why using all caps looks like yelling. THIS is about the only reason that I do NOT like either Oreo or Pie. Neither one of them have this feature anymore. You can not have specific tones for the specific contact. You can only get specific tones for the Conversation thread. The custom tones in Messages survive ONLY as long as you don't delete the thread. And will NOT work in a group text environment. The "Update" that everyone is cheering for is only a stop gap measure. Please, return the feature.
This conversation thread has been going on for what? 8 Months now?? And people still don't understand it.
SAMSUNG. WE WANT THIS FEATURE BACK. And I will continue to request politely that this feature be returned. No matter how many times my posts get DELETED again.
Thank you.

Galaxy S9 SeriesOMG, hate this phone. I had a iphone from 4 up to 7, thought it was time for a change. Remember that saying "change isn't always necessarily good" well it sure fits here. Can't assing ring tones to caller. Can't sync with the cloud. Shifty sales team for a shifty product.

Galaxy S9 SeriesSAMSUNG - This is not negotiable. Bad enough you made the S9 SMALLER than the S7, but to remove BASIC features is deeply disappointing and unacceptable.
It's not a question of IF, but WHEN are you going to add back the custom message tones for each contact?

Galaxy S9 SeriesTo everyone who is suggesting to use Textra think about why we should need to use a third party app for a basic feature that was on past phones? I for one think that we should not be forced to use an app for such a basic feature that was in previous phones. Samsung should just stop wasting time and add the function promptly.
It really is agitating now that after almost 3 years with different tones for contacts I now have one tone for messages!

Galaxy S9 SeriesRight on!

Galaxy S9 SeriesI contacted Samsung and they said they had no plans to bring this feature back to us. In my case it happened on the last OREO update. So, for now, we have to use a third party app. Not ideal I know, but even if they do bring it back, it would have to go some to match Textra...Freddie

Galaxy S9 SeriesGo to your text messages. Click on the person you would like to assign a text tone to. Click the 3 dots on the top right corner. Click on notifications. You can then change it. You have to access it through your text message string, not in your contacts.

Galaxy S9 SeriesI agree, Samsung need to sort this out soonest. I contacted their online help desk and was told this feature (I.e. it's removal) was voted for by the majority of users. What a load of rot- bring it back forthwith.
I've also noticed you can no longer assign your own notification tone to Facebook, only one from their closed list.

I don't know of anyone who doesn't use personal notification settings. A very regressive move from Samsung!

Galaxy S9 SeriesI upgraded from the 6 and am hugely frustrated that this has been removed.
Definitely a step back for Samsung! Very regressive!
