S9 Dual Sim / Hybrid Sim

I am lucky enough enough to be able to upgrade to a S9 and wondered if there are any drawbacks to having a dual sim. I understand that i have to remove the SD card so those apps and data won't be available, but unless there are any differences I can't see why Samsung produce two models at the same price

My concern is that a dual sim runs a different version of the OS so may be slower in getting updates or Android P.

Anyone got first hand experience?

I do occasionally travel overseas and carrying two phones is a pain

Thanks,

Rob

I have a Note 8 dual sim. I have used Dual sim phones for about 4 years. I had an S8 Plus single sim. but have never noticed any problems in speed or performance with the Dual sim. With the Note 8 the added bonus is running 2 versions of apps like 2 WhatsApp accounts from the one phone.  Very handy when away.

Hi there,

Been using dual SIM for many years.  The hybrid SIM disadvantage is that it functions as SIM and storage card slot and you would lose the storage if SIM is desired.

Other than this factor, there is no other disadvantages.

Naturally, both SIM cannot function at 4G state at the same time.

Do we know if the additional SIM means a smaller battery? I can't imagine it woudl thinking about it... it's so small!

No,  the 2nd sim replaces the memory card.  You can interchange them at will using the cradle

Ok, thanks for that.

I thought that you have both sims operational and have two numbers on the go which is half the point.

Both phones work all the time. Only one can use data at a time. It works great for me for that reason. Choosing which phone to call from and use data from is easy.

There's technically a few options on having treo donuts and a cupcake too.
Using two SIMs and an SD. One you can b use SIM tray that hands out the phone (usually remedied by covering it with a case) but that compromises the water resistance properties. Another requires you to remove the entire IC* from the SIM card- or the card from the- IC and glue it to the sd card trimming part of the metal from the IC. The obvious down side is that if you need to remove the replace the either the SIM or the SD card ghoul lose the other. If you're good you might be able to remove the SIM without damaging the SD, not something I see myself doing.

It may be better just to have more solid space on your phone instead.

Hi. You say they can’t both work with 4G at the same time. Will both sims be able to receive calls and texts at the same time ? Thanks

As Madmum says, you should be able to use both sims but only the data from one of them which ist logical

I have been playing around with my S9+ hybrid sim and it is superb.

I have put in my normal 3 contract sim and a new Vodafone payg sim and it is all very seamless and well implimented. You have full and easy control over which sim you use for everything and it just seems to work. The Three website has dire warnings that their sim will not work if it is not the primary sim, but that appears to be wrong, it works whichever you choose as the primary sim.

Losing the sd card is not good, but it is manageable now the base memory has doubled.

This adds so much flexibility, what is there not to love!

Hi mate, the hybrid (dual SIM) version means you could either utilise the phone to hold a second SIM card OR a memory card. The single SIM version of phone does not give you the choice, it is purely one SIM, one memory card. All other specs are the same so hybrid everytime for me purely for flexibility!

Hope this helps :smiling-face:

Great answers. Im thinking if getting the hybrid sim s9+

I have as well as my s8, the lgv20. It's dual sim PLUS sd card slot.

That was needed as it's just 64gb storage but the s9+ is 128gb so although I loose my memory card, I can use my spare SIM and still have loads of room.

My question is however, why does Sammy make single sim an option?

Why not just make every phone hybrid.

You don't lose the memory card option, you can either put an extra sim card in OR a memory card, you have the choice of one or the other in the hybroh version.

I have no idea why they have the different versions though!?

The network carriers don't want dual sim phones. They want you tied to their network and only theirs. The phone makers want as many networks as possible as an outlet for their products so they'll supply single sim to keep them happy.

Ive had an s8+ dual SIM since September and it's fantastic. I love the way that everything is integrated. I looked at getting something to add an addtional SIM to an iPhone but the problem is the 2nd SIM is always part of an app and so looks and works differently. The dual SIM way is perfect. I'e ordered an S9 now that they do dual SIM on the smaller handset.

You won't regret it!

It is is not 'Dual Active".

Until then it is not that practical.

Are u sure? With my s8 both are live at the same time. In the sim manager u can set what u want to happen should one sim ring whilst on the other line. It also works perfectly well when connected to the car via Bluetooth.

No I am not sure but my understanding is that 99% of Dual Sim card phones are Dual Stand By today, not Dual Active.  You may want to research that and post back your findings. If it is Dual Active I am really interested but then why would Samsung not brag about it. It is the holy grail. Everybody would want that capability in their phone. Here in the US I would have to buy an international version of the phone. Right now I have to carry 2 cell phones. As they get bigger and bigger it gets more inconvenient.

I'll let u know once the s9 turns up but the s8 is definitely dual active mate and it works seamlessly. In the UK you can only get them direct from Samsung though. The mobile shops don't stock them. Mine runs EE and Vodafone both live at the same time.
