Galaxy S9+ Major Update issues (DO NOT get 9.0 yet)

I've updated my Galaxy S9+ few days ago and notice a growing number of issues and bugs:

  • Multi Window split is horribly broken. Causes many apps to straight up crash (Reddit for example) and if done in landscape mode displays a fully black screen that it's hard to get out of. Many apps do no center properly when scaling the windows and are overlapped by the top toolbar with the clock and other information. There is no way to know which app now supports multiwindow and which doesn't as the default behavior dumps you to the recent app and there is no screen that shows only compatible ones.
  • UI navigation is noticeably slower in many occasions. Going through menus some do not react when taping their options. I'm asking myself frequently "Have I tapped it or not" after the update
  • Samsung apps behave slow. Messaging, contacts, and pretty much any updated Samsung app when accessing and navigating it, I can see how the information is displayed element by element. Messaging for example, first background, then top header, then parts of the message than rest of the UI and this is very very noticeable
  • Transitional animations are mostly broken. When it works it looks good but in majority of cases the animations free and glitch or straight up don't play. There are multiple cases where the animation plays left only for the UI to glitch from the center after the animation ends
  • Fades ins and outs are mostly broken. Opening notifications panel has a fading blur, closing it is a snap to clear. Same behavior is with recent apps.
  • Locking and unlocking is noticeably slower. Takes up to 3 seconds for the AOD to display or for me to unlock the phone from off display
  • Auto reset is HORRIBLY broken! Let start that it was turned on by default! But not only that it was setup to reset once a week but it did that every day at 3 AM. BUT my FAVORITE part was when it actually did that, the phone was left on the PIN unlock screen making a CONSTANT REGULAR KEY CLICKING NOISE every odd second or so regardless if display is on or off. Was woken up two nights in a row because of it until I realized that it's the phone and why.
  • There are some gesture controls over the bottom buttons that i can't figure for the life of me how they work and if they are supposed to be there at all. When pressing them sometimes the phone glitches the whole area visually and the UI flickers through multiple screens in a second, ending with a half-displayed app in the end that needs to be closed as the touch doesn't actually work on it

This is in no way ready to release build. It's is most definetly still a BETA, do not recommend updating if you like a flyent and clean experience. The UI has constant glitches, flickers and other graphical issues. It is stable for the most part but it's not an experience i like to have on my phone. Don't have solid observations over battery life yet, seems to be the same as before. I personally don't enjoy the new look. Feels needlessly bulky and bloated. I do enjoy moving the contextual pop ups on the bottom (although not all are there yet).

Android 9 is extremely buggy, thankfully what I've noticed is only a multitude of mostly visual ones and the phone is very much usable, but I've had it only for a few days. I wonder what will be the issue tomorrow.

PS: Factory reseting the phone does nothing than waste more time to recover all the data back

PPS: Samsung need to take their software more seriously, while writing the comment pressed the page down on my kb by mistake and ended up with a broken website.. (try it for yourself too)

Can add the loss of scroll capture to this list. My favourite function list from the s9. And the all important adaptive brightness is a fail now.

I am also very unhappy with the new update. It's gotten rid of the edge swipe being able to show data usage (you can select it but it doesn't show up), always on display just doesnt seem to turn on consistently, and quite often when going to background apps, it misses the animation or throws me in on some random app.

Some apps refuse to work anymore and just crash also.

I hope these are fixed as I'm about to get the s10 and if it's anything like this I will not be.

It's certainly a shame your experiencing the issues you've listed with the One ui @ShaMana

A Factory Reset or clearing the phones System Cache Files is a tried and trusted way of resolving most user issues but not all of them and yes it can be a  kind to restore info and some maybe lost and the restore wont always put things back as they were beforehand.

This is why I advise that a Factory Reset is a very last resort.

The experience on my Note 9 has mostly been a positive and fluid experience.

One Ui has taken a couple of features away that I liked and used and have sent feedback via the Samsung Members App.

i.e. multitask view is only cards now and I prefer the stacked look.

I use two different network sim cards in my Note 9 and preferred the way the phone showed which signal bars in the top status bar I was currently using via a box around it.

Some apps won't be optimised for Samsung One Ui yet so the developers I'm sure will be bringing in updates etc so it's always an idea to check in the Playstore for updates and if necessary send the developers bug reports.

Putting the phone in Safe Mode is always my first bit of advice to help troubleshoot.

Also it did take a day or two for my Note 9 to fully index i.e. settle down after the update.

I do not use any 3rd party launchers or Themes and have not side loaded any apps etc via apk files if that helps.

Well @BandOfBrothers, I can't speak how the update works on Note 9, as I and everyone here probably don't have one, this being a S9 community forum, but only reading other posts and comments, this is not the reality for majority of users. A for effort, F for helpfulness. Im adding a few more items to the list.

Multiwindow no longer has windows swap between top and bottom area
Opening the Smart Things area from the notifications panel in landscape blocks any touch input making gestures completely not functional, including closing the notifications bar it self if done in some applications. The only way to close it is force press the home button to pop out Google Assistant and then the touch is active once more allowing the notifications panel along side with all active apps to be closed.

This update is simply a joke.

Agreed that this update is terrible. Putting aside the awful look of the icons (seriously looks like it's been designed for the under 5's and over 80's) my phone no longer works as a phone. You know that thing where you make and receive calls, doesn't work so well when you can't hear anything and the other person can't hear you. If I put it on speaker phone I was able to hear my voicemail at least. My colleague who has the same phone as me also has this issue. Terrible terrible update.

Adding a few more issues

  • Getting a call while playing a graphically intensive game may cause the screen to freeze which can't be fixed without the phone being locked first. Which is a bit of an issue taking that I've setup to close calls with the power button
  • selecting notifications from the notification panel may take up to 10! seconds to open the desired app. While the phone is still operational in the mean time and the app suddenly popup after a while

I mean is that a joke. I see more and more serious issues every single day

I firmly believe any changes in the most part, like that of an update, should be a seamless process. While older models understandably would have degrees of problems, this should not be the case with the newer handsets.

Personally speaking, if I have to potentially factory reset my phone for each update/software enhancement ( I use the latter loosly if u consider its definition) someone some where has not done there job correctly. Factory reset is a painful time consuming process and a function used to wipe a phone before it is sold to another party or extreme technical failure. I therefore don't really consider this ro be a fix to a problem which in many cases still delivers disappointment.

Add to list:

Removed ability to change volumes of individual alarms. Took me a while to realise why my young family kept being disturbed when alarm went off after update.

Double tap space bar to punctuate sporadic.

Wake up Google from voice 'ok Google's command does no longer work when phone is locked. Phone vibrates to indicate its herd but no screen change and no further input. This function was a necessity used allot when driving to call people, get directions exc. This new update has now majorly affected the safety of drivers as I now have to touch the power button as I drive taking hands off steering wheel.  Reason I use Google over Bixby is coz the latter has mic conflictions preventing Bixby from hearing unless I shout and even then it's not clear on what I say.  Moreover, did the update not say it would give u options for Bixby key, this is not the case.

Basically Samsung u have tried to simplify the software and failed. Fact is if I wanted simple and generic I would have stayed with iPhone. I chose Samsung specifically for its complexity and diversity something which it has now lost.

Wish I could back date and choose os to reinstall.
