Bring back the individual text tones and notifications on S9

I am somewhat regretting getting the S9 because I can't complete the simple task of setting individual text tones for my contacts. I also hate that it sounds like I have a text when an email comes in or any other notification that isn't a text since apparently separate apps aren't allowed to have different notification sounds. Please, just put it back to how you had it before Samsung!

Just found an easy solution and am now able to customize individual contact text notifications...go into your text conversation with the person you want to change tones. In the top right corner press the three dots. Turn "on" the custom notification button then touch in the larger white box that actually states "custom notification".  Then choose "sound". Here, you can choose a different sound for that person. Back out if this menu and that individuals sound is saved.

This is only for the thread of messages I dont want to keep my messages they will have it fixed with the 10 I'm sure they will im.not paying another 1000 bucks for it tho

They didn't bring it back on the 10 ! P****s me off. Why would they take it away in the first place ??? I actually just discovered that all customization goes away when you delete the conversation.  WHAT B.S .so now I delete all messages in the conversation individually and leave the 1st one so it doesn't delete settings. Pain in the ass but only way it works.

THANK YOU!!  I was afraid that people had forgotten about this fiasco.  Before, I could get a text from a computer or Pharmacist and save it to my contacts and assign a quiet little beep to it.  Now, I have to keep a copy of their last text message in order to preserve the customization.  I have tons of messages that I have to keep in order to maintain that custom tone.  WHY IN THE WORLD DID SAMSUNG DO THIS???  And please do not forget that that "Custom" text message tone does NOT EXTEND TO GROUP MESSAGES.  You get the default tone even though the members of that group have "Customized" Text message tones.  So much for Personalization I see.

Ok.. here we go again.  No, that won't work.

1.  The tone is not assigned to the person.  It is assigned to the conversation thread.  So to maintain that "Custom" text message tone, you must NEVER delete that thread.  If you delete that thread, then there goes that customization.  I don't know about you, but I like to clear up some memory occasionally by deleting some of the THOUSANDS of text messages that I get.

2.  The "New" method does not work with Group text messages.  (As has been listed many times earlier in this thread)  For example.

Assign Tone A to Person A

Assign Tone B to Person B

Assign Tone C to Person C

Send a text message to each person one at a time and await their response.  You will get Tone A for A, B for B and C for C.

NOW Send a GROUP text to Person A, B and C and await their response.  You will get default the tonefor a general Text Message for each person.  Assign a Tone to that Group message and you will get ONE tone for Person A, B and C when they are responding in a group.

My pharmacy sends me messages every month, reminding me that my Meds are ready to be refilled.  I Save that contact and assign a Quiet little beep for it.  I know who it is, I don't have to stop and read my messages.  I can keep a computer waiting for a bit.  On the other hand, I have my alarm company assigned a NASTY LOUD tone.  That way I know that it is an EMERGENCY that requires immediate attention.  My wife, and both my daughters have personalized tones.  If my eldest sends me a message, I know who it is before hand.  Same with my youngest and my wife.  BUT if my eldest sends a Group message to everyone, I get my default text tone.

In the past, the text tones were assigned to the CONTACT and not the MESSAGE.  We need it BACK.  Textra no longer has the contact information to look for the text tones.  Most of my text messages are Group convesations between Family, Friends, Co-workers...

It's simple, just go onto your email app, click the 3 dots and change the notifications sound.

Since you didn't read the text and the post just above your comment,  I'll save time and just cut and paste.

Coming from an LG G3 I am surprised by the lack of customization options for this new high end phone. Of course I want separate meme notification sounds for each friend... what are you thinking removing that option Samsung!?

You can still personalize your message tone.

Go to your message app and look for the three little dots on the right side. Click/touch it (whatever you wann call it) then go to notifications. NOW. There are two. General notifications and new messages. Obv its new messages but general notifications like if the message failed to send, may be changed too. There you go.

I love doing this... I've pointed this out sooo many times.  There are many apps out there for SMS that will allow  you to customize a text message tone for a message thread.  I am using textra at this time.  However, none of them will allow that customization to overlap into GROUP messages.

For example, I assign Tone A to friend A and Tone B to friend B.  I send a message to A, and when they respond I hear the tone for friend A.  The same goes with Friend B.

BUT, if I send a group message to friend A AND to friend B, when either of them respond, I get the default text message tone.  Whereas before, when I assigned tones to the INDIVIDUAL through the contacts app, the custom tones extended to group messages also because the tones were assigned to the individual and not the message thread.

Also, by assigning them to the thread, I must retain a copy of at least one message in that thread for ever and ever.  IF I delete the thread, there goes all the customization for that individual.

I liked to be able to assign a quiet little beep to my pharmacy reminding me that it's time to refill my meds, and a nasty, loud obnoxious siren tone to my alarm company telling me that my house is being broke into.  I liked to be able to assign individual tones to my family member so that I could tell who it was before I looked, even if they sent a message to me, or to the entire family.  The same for co-workers, team members, friends....  Group messages account for about 60% of my texting.

My point is....  It wasn't broke then.  So why did they break it now?

Bring back the individual text tones to the CONTACTS APP., it's been two years and still no change, Samsung Lied, it sucks that they told us that they were bringing back the individual contact text tones, but they din't do it, they just added to the messages app. so now we have to set up conversations and then set the tone. which means we are having a bunch on conversations and wen we delte them we have to set the tone again and again, and again, this sucks.we need this back in contacts app not in messages, WTF, android 8 sucks, android 9 sucks, android 10 sucks.

I couldn't agree more.

I hate being tethered to my phone.

It made it easy to know if it was something that could wait, or something/someone that I needed to address right away.

Contacts Work/Family/Medical, Apps, Games, Alerts... knowing exactly what was going on made my life a lot simpler, and its frustrating having to keep the phone on me and  pick up my phone every single time it goes off.

Obviously, they have the capability to do this, I desperately wish they'd bring it back. It was a great convenience.
