think that phone is intended for use in the US that might be why

The most likely reason is that it is not in the region it should be.

Adam is on the right track but these numbers above that you have linked, won't be able to give you that.

If you go to software information- service provider information then the CSC code (country specific code) can be seen. It is likely this phone is not from the UK.

This happens all the time with backmarket and other recycling companies.

If you have not had it long it might be worth considering sending it back, although there is a manual way to get the updates. This is however a more technical way and you say not tech savvy... but maybe the next step to get the latest update.

If you can share your CSC code then it would be a starting point.

Hi! Welcome to the Samsung Members community UK/EU.

Your region code SAOMC_SM-S918U_OYN_GCF_13_0007 GCF/GCF, GCF/XAA.

This is a USA-based device. If you are not in the USA, that is why you are experiencing issues. Phones are designed to work in their respective regions.

When I spoke to Samsung customer support they said as long as it's taking a UK SIM card and getting the signal it should be fine, is there a way of changing it? Or am I looking at getting it sent back?

GCF code is a worrying one. Strangely it does seem to be an 'unknown US region' code.

How long have you had the phone from backmarket ?

The unknown CSC part is the slightly worrying bit... it could be an indication that someone before you has tried to reprogram the device with a custom software... although it still might be a genuine samsung build. It is hard to tell.

With this (seemingly) being a US region phone, you may have some troubles with some services, such as the payment systems through google / samsung, and also the 5G bands that are supported (these are different in the US).

Personally I would try and get an exchange, but if you have owned it past the backmarket time for their warranty, you may be stuck with it.

In terms of updates, it may be possible to force the software using a 'smart switch' PC utility. This requires on a desktop/ laptop to locate the latest software and force it to the phone with a cable connection.

I am not too familiar with this, but there are users here that are experienced in updating a phone over smartswitch.

Is that ok? Is that what's stopping me getting updates? I've tried to go on smart switch and that didn't work either.
