Samsung S23+ won't go into recovery mode - Apps keep crashing

Hi,

My partner bought me a Samsung Galaxy S23+ off Music Magpie for Christmas. It was brought as 'pristine condition'.

Ever since I've had the phone I've had issues with it. On the outside its perfect, no scratches or defects at all but I think there's something very wrong with the operating system or something internally within the phone.

When I first had it, it would restart randomly. Early hours of one morning I was awoken to the screen constantly lighting up turns out it was restarting over and over again, then another morning in the early hours the notification sound was constantly pinging and it was in a crashed state, I had to force turn it off.

Apps will constantly crash and it trys to tell me to put them into a deep sleep. These have included Natwest,  TUI, Outlook, Google Services, Samsung Keyboard, Twitch....all kinds of apps honestly and to maybe get them to work I had to restart the phone.

Anyway I got so fed up of it constantly crashing, restarting every single night, apps not working I sent it back to Music Magpie for them to have a look. I sent them a load of screenshots and videos to show them what my phone was doing and they came back and said they couldn't find anything wrong with the phone.

So it's been sent back to me and this time I have set up the phone without using smart switch just in case that was causing an issue. I've added all apps manually and although its a lot better than it was, it does still go on a wobble, not as much as before, but it's still annoying. For instance yesterday I had to restart as the keyboard stopped working, today it said authenticator stopped working so I couldn't open outlook.

So I thought I'd try clearing the data partition to see if that worked (this time!, I tried when I first had the phone and it did nothing). Anyway I've done as instructed by other community members, powered it down, connected it to my laptop and pressed the volume buttons and power button together but instead of the screen I had before coming up, this has instead.

So my question is, why isn't the recovery screen coming up and what can I do? I am so annoyed with Music Magpie as they have literally been no help at all and I feel like I've got an expensive new phone which is faulty and not fit for purpose when apps don't work or the keyboard stops working.

Any help/guidance appreciated. TIA

P.S. the phone has 12 month warranty so with Music Magpie bit as they couldn't replicate the problem when I sent it back they just said they couldn't do anything

I had this with a new device - looks like you have a case on it? Remove the case and ensure only the power button and volume up is pushed.

This screen comes up when all 3 are pressed - for me, it was the case pushing the button...try it with case off

Sorry should just show for ease, these are the kinds of  notifications that pop up when apps don't work. These are not the only occasions and there have been many more. I also have videos of the issues.

I have no experience in these issues with my s23 ultra. However looking at the error screen you have added, it seems that the device may have been 'rooted' with custom software. This may explain the reasons for the crashing errors.

Personally I would send it back to music magpie. This is just one of the reasons that buying a second hand phone with an unknown history is not always a great idea. Also you can end up with a phone from a different region and find updates are not easily accessible.

I would always buy new from samsung.

I'm sorry to learn your experiencing these issues @Mandyminx08

In your About Phone section what software does it say the phone is on ?

Perhaps screenshot that whole.page and upload it here.

As for putting the phone into clearing the phone's System Partition Cache Files Section this is the instructions.

Clear Cache Files from the phone's System Partition Section  > https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-do-i-clear-the-cache-on-my-device/ You may need to insert your earphones or hook upto a powered On Laptop or use a Tv's USB Port to access the Clear Partition Section. This may help with lag or stutters as this clears the phone of old/unused or broken cache files. There is also a Repair Apps option in the Menu System too.

It's possible the phone's software is at issue or knox has been tripped.

My personal opinion would be to ask Music Magpie for a refund.

Also a Samsung Experience Store or Samsung Service Centre can assess your phone.

The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.

Thank you Gus. This made the difference lol. I have been able to wipe the partition and have repaired apps. I am hoping I have no further issues now 🤞🤞

Thank you for the response. Turns out having a phone cover on doesn't help with getting into recovery mode. I have cleared the partition and repaired apps just in case and hoping this is a fix. But just to confirm, this is the about info, honestly this means absolutely nothing to me.

*sigh* wiped cache partition and repaired apps and instantly. I appreciate the help btw.

I appreciate my partner got me essentially a 'second hand' phone but he still paid a lot for it and it should still be fit for purpose. He just wanted me to have a better phone than I had without paying out the ears for it and trying to save a bit. We learn from our mistakes.

Oh no 😮 I'm sorry to hear this. If you done a full reset, cleared cache etc I don't know what else to suggest other than returning it.

Could always use it as trade in for a new one 👀
