PERMANENT FIX FOR APP CRASHES AVAILABLE

A permanent fix for the issues which stated yesterday is now available.

Multiple people are now reporting that the latest updates for both webview (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview) and chrome (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome) have fixed the issue.
If these apps have updates available, you should try installing these updates. If you are still having issues after updating these apps, see this thread https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s21-series/temporary-fix-for-app-crashing-issue/td-p/3117... for details of a temporary fix.

Users who have already applied the temporary fix should be able to update the apps, however if this causes the issue to return, you should repeat the instructions in the original thread to uninstall them again. If updating does not cause the issue to return, you should be able to safely re-enable automatic updates.

If anyone continues to have issues after updating both apps, please let me know so that I can update the post with details of the issue.

EDIT: The Samsung members anti-spam feature appears to be periodically blocking me from commenting. Sorry if I'm not able to respond to comments immediately.

EDIT: If you want to share this thread, press the share button in the top right corner of the screen (it looks like 3 circles with lines between them) then press on copy. You should then be able to paste the link wherever you need to use it.

Ongoing issues:
  • A number of people are experiencing issues updating these apps (mostly getting stuck at the pending download stage) and many of these users appear to be unable to uninstall previous updates through Google play. These users should uninstall updates through the system settings (details in the thread at https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s21-series/temporary-fix-for-app-crashing-issue/td-p/3117...)
  • One user has reported issues with the play store itself crashing when attempting to download the updates.
  • A small number of users have reported the issues persisting after updating both affected apps. I would guess that for whatever reason the new (fixed) version isn't yet available to these users, however I would welcome feedback from anyone who may know more.
If anyone has any idea how these users can sort the issues out, please let me know so that I can update this post with details.

If you are experiencing any issues after trying the above fix, please let me know (even if it is already listed above), and include as much detail as you can (what is happening, do any errors appear, etc.).

None of the issues appear to make the problem any worse or reintroduce solved problems.

Hi all. Further to the advice offered by @JamesCKelsall you can access the app updates for Android System WebView and Chrome by following the steps below.

Settings > Apps > Search 'webview' > Android System WebView > App Details In Store > Update

Settings > Apps > Chrome > App Details In Store > Update

Please note that If the Update menu is not available, please tap the Enable button to activate the app update.

Adding these to the thread in case they help folks:

Updating Google Play Store

1. Open Play Store app
2. Open the Hamburger Menu (three lines at the top left)
3. Tap My Apps and Games
4. Tap Updates
5. Tap Update All
6. Restart your phone

Update Webview and Chrome
1. Open the Play Store app (If there is an issue of opening/ searching in Play store go to Guide “Force Closing Google Pay “
2. Search for: Android System WebView
3. Select the app in the Play Store and then choose to update it. (If the option to update is not available in the Play Store, the app is de-activated and you should follow steps a - e below, before continuing to step 4.)
a. Open Settings in your phone and then select Apps.
b. Find Chrome, select it, and deactivate the app.
c. Reopen the Play Store app and follow Steps 2 & 3 as the update option now should be available for Android System WebView app.
d. After the update is completed, open settings in the phone again and then select Apps.
e. Again, find Chrome, select it and choose to activate the app.
4. Now open the Play Store app and search for Chrome.
5. Select the app in the Play Store and then choose to update it if an update is available. If there are no available updates to Chrome, then you already have the latest version installed.
6. Restart your device.

Force Closing Google Play
If update get stuck in play store when searching for updates, just spinning and not finding anything. This can be solved by force closing Google Play Store, so just test the following;
1. Open Settings
2. Go to Apps
3. Open Apps and find App Google Play Store
4. Tap Storage and clear Data and Cache
5. Return to App details
6. Click Force quit
7. Relaunch Play Store (might take a while to open as all data has been cleared)
8. Go back and follow step 1-6 from guide “Update Webview and Chrome”

If Android Webview Beta is installed on your device

Manually uninstall updates of the Beta app by:

1. Settings
2. Apps
3. Search Webview
4. Tab Android System
5. Webview Beta
6. Tap more (three vertical dots)
7. Uninstall updates
8. And then carry out updating official Webview app to the latest version.

(Also temporarily marked as a 'solution' so more peeps can see it.)

@JamesCKelsall , Cheers! Very much appreciate your efforts! 😎:thumbs-up-sign-emoji-modifier-fitzpatrick-type:

And that would be the board's auto-anti-spam measures (rather than an actual ban), which we can't alter.

Have you tried updating both apps, and did the updates succeed? If not, what errors did you receive.

If the issue still occurred after updating both apps, have you tried uninstalling the updates for them (details in the original thread at https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s21-series/temporary-fix-for-app-crashing-issue/td-p/3117...)?

If there are no updates for the two apps in question (webview and chrome), you should follow the instructions in this thread https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s21-series/temporary-fix-for-app-crashing-issue/td-p/3117...
