@scotti78: Try heading to the Google Play Store to see if there are any updates available for Android Auto that might address the issue. I'd also recommend going to Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Force Stop > Storage > Clear cache > Clear data, then restarting your phone to address any temporary performance issues.
If the problem persists, please can you confirm if you are connected to your car via USB or Bluetooth when the issue occurs? Are you making sure to accept the relevant permissions when prompted? As a further troubleshooting step, head back to Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Permissions, and allow all permissions here to see if this helps.
