Update: You can fix this problem by disabling GOS. I found this out quite long ago but I forgot to edit this post, sorry about that guys. GOS = (Samsung) Game Optimising Service. To disable it follow this tutorial, I'd highly recommend using the package disabler method and not ADB as the ADB method does not seem to persist after a reboot:
@Anonymous User what are you guys doing?? I have tested pretty much every single 90-120FPS supported title and so far only ONE of them actually works, Subway surfers. All other 90/120fps supporting games do not work because for some reason OneUI/Android scales the display down to 60Hz.
I'm guessing Samsung have implemented some sort of API that allows a game to tell the phone to run at 120hz which would suggest why subway surfers works (it's on the galaxy store, maybe they work closer with Samsung) but for me this is unacceptable considering other device manufacturers use a more unified method of refresh rate scaling.
Why is it that over 60fps titles work perfectly on other variable refresh rate phones (Pixel 4, OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro, Nubia RedMagic 5G, Black shark etc.) But on Samsung there's some sort of unique API used instead. This is causing fragmentation, you know a lot of developers will ignore this. Why can't you guys just use the same method as other phone manufacturers? I'm guessing android itself has its own variable refresh rate API which is why all these other phones have no problem with scaling the refresh rate up on these titles.
There are many games that support unlocked framerate now and the S20 Ultra as of now can't take advantage of any of them, I guarantee any game you guys are playing besides subway surfers is running at 60fps and you can check this with game tools.
Some games which are able to support 90 and 120FPS but DONT on the S20 series because of the way Samsung has implemented variable refresh rate include:
I paid a lot of money for my S20 Ultra @Anonymous User please get your 💩 together. Also please release an update for WQHD @ 120hz, I don't understand how other companies are releasing phones with both WQHD + 120hz and you guys haven't done it for the S20 series yet even though you make all the displays for these other companies. Thanks.
Disabling GOS in my opionion is not optimal, it may be bugged but it keeps phone temps and clock speeds in check, i did a few tests and disabling it leads to much higher temperatures and the benefit of the higher fps is not prolonged since soon or after massive throttling has to come into play to avoid damaging components.
From my deduction it offers an additional layer between the thermal sensor communication with the gpu drivers to get the optimal balance, it may need further investigation by the development team to make the algorithm better, but it is quite an essential part from my pov
I have got Package Disabler Pro. And I have seen the reddit post. And its either not working - or I can't see the difference.
As I said, the difference between 30 and 60 is massive, I can see that. And so, 60 vs 120 should be massive. In apps like Facebook and general UI animation there is a noticeable difference between 60 and 120.
But I'm just not seeing it in bullet force. Especially the mini map, and reload movement. Saw no difference.
And to reiterate the main point. We shouldn't have to do all this for our devices to enable 120fps. Samsung should enable, or at least give us the option to!
It works with PUBG to get 60 fps instead of 40 FPS but his disabling inhibits the control of thermals which skyrocket significantly from my experience and then the drop heavily because the heat generated is too much.
Use members to write feedback for the development team so they can look into GOS to make it better
We need to bring this to Samsung's attention - after testing quite a large list of games I can confirm that one of the only games which actually works at 120FPS on the S20 series is Subway surfers. That's about it. Every other game that natively supports 90/120/Unlocked FPS doesn't actually run over 60FPS on the S20 series because of the way the variable refresh rate system works on our phones. It's a software thing, but it's stupid because it seems to only be a Samsung problem. I'll explain what I mean.
When the Razer phone came out (120hz phone), a lot of titles were updated/released to support the new refresh rate, here's a list of most of them:
Mortal Kombat X
Marvel Contest of Champions
Shadow Fight 3
Real Racing 3
Hill Climb Racing 2
Need for Speed No Limits
Battlejack: Blackjack RPG
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition
Fire Emblem Heroes
I have 3 of the games (Altos Oddyssey, DBZ Legends and WOT Blitz) on the list you have, 1 of them (Blitz) definitely has the option in the game settings to roll 120fps, but I can't select it.
I even tried getting pubg just for the 120fps but even that didn't want to let me use that either.
I'm really annoyed at this, why make the phone with the ability to do this if nothing is able to use it?
