Update: You can fix this problem by disabling GOS. I found this out quite long ago but I forgot to edit this post, sorry about that guys. GOS = (Samsung) Game Optimising Service. To disable it follow this tutorial, I'd highly recommend using the package disabler method and not ADB as the ADB method does not seem to persist after a reboot:

@Anonymous User what are you guys doing?? I have tested pretty much every single 90-120FPS supported title and so far only ONE of them actually works, Subway surfers. All other 90/120fps supporting games do not work because for some reason OneUI/Android scales the display down to 60Hz.

I'm guessing Samsung have implemented some sort of API that allows a game to tell the phone to run at 120hz which would suggest why subway surfers works (it's on the galaxy store, maybe they work closer with Samsung) but for me this is unacceptable considering other device manufacturers use a more unified method of refresh rate scaling.

Why is it that over 60fps titles work perfectly on other variable refresh rate phones (Pixel 4, OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro, Nubia RedMagic 5G, Black shark etc.) But on Samsung there's some sort of unique API used instead. This is causing fragmentation, you know a lot of developers will ignore this. Why can't you guys just use the same method as other phone manufacturers? I'm guessing android itself has its own variable refresh rate API which is why all these other phones have no problem with scaling the refresh rate up on these titles.

There are many games that support unlocked framerate now and the S20 Ultra as of now can't take advantage of any of them, I guarantee any game you guys are playing besides subway surfers is running at 60fps and you can check this with game tools.

I paid a lot of money for my S20 Ultra @Anonymous User please get your 💩 together. Also please release an update for WQHD @ 120hz, I don't understand how other companies are releasing phones with both WQHD + 120hz and you guys haven't done it for the S20 series yet even though you make all the displays for these other companies. Thanks.

Has anyone heard anything from Samsung about this yet? I go in touch with Niantic about Pokemon GO, which also supports a higher refresh rate than 30FPS and they said its a manufacturers decision to support their apps higher refresh rate.?

nope. The developer also has the responsibility to be sure that his game is compatible with a phone

Well I managed to unlock 60FPS on Pokemon GO!
Have to turn off battery optimisation on the app, and then launch the game. Go to recents, and then back in the game to trigger 60FPS. Doesn't work for 120fps compatible games though... 😒

I want to know what's going on with the 120hz issue.

No games work for me higher than 60. Star wars GOH runs at 30! My son has the rog phone 2, runs anything at 120hz. The screen seems so much nicer than mine by comparison. It's almost like the s20 ultra isn't a proper 120hz display.

Are we saying that every developer has updated their apps for that specific phone but not for Samsungs flagship?.. Hmmm

I don't believe this statement that each developer needs to make it compatible for each phone.
I think that's a ridiculous statement. You're saying, of the millions of android devices, every developer has to make their app support each and everyone of those devices individually!!?? No!
And so you think Asus went to each of those publishers listed above and told them to make their games 120fps enabled on their device specifically? Don't believe that either.
I'm much more inclined to believe Niantic's statement that Samsung hasn't enabled it on their devices. Not just because the former statement is ridiculous but because I've to trick the phone into enabling even 60fps. Which means it DOES support it. Samsung is choosing not to let it.

I don't like being jealous of my sons silky smooth £460 phone when mine is "worth" £1200. Leaves me with a tangy bitter taste, Mr Samsung bitter indeed.

I'd love a comment from anybody at Samsung regarding this. #goodluckme
