On my Samsung galaxy s20 ultra,  a new app has been installed , probably with the new update a few days ago.

It's called private share and its asking for MSISDN, its asking me to contact my sim provider and tell them to add my phone number to my sim.

My provider ,o2, says it can't do this, can this be done manually

I asked EE and virgin, as I have a few active sims, no provider does this ..

If not I'll just delete it

It's not the app really.. your phone reads the number from your sim. some 2015, companies have started to issue generic (blank) simcards which are activated when you call them.

How do you add your number to the sim?

unfortunately, Android doesn't have this feature. The only way to go about is inserting your sim to an old Blackberry phone and add your number to the sim.

When you re-insert the sim in your S21.. it will read the number.. mine does now !!

Excellent!!! They have made a program that will not work on 90% of existing SIMs, since the majority of SIMs did not set the number. You need to get an old Nokia / Symbian or a Blackberry that allow you to write the phone number on the SIM. Contacting your mobile operator is useless.

This feature is linked to the phone number registered on the sim card. Considering that many have been porting or tranferring their number from a different operator to that sim, they won't be able to use this service. As far as I know you can't change the number registered on the sim so to match the actual number you use. Based on that, this is another short sighted and useless feature from the most short sighted tech company in the world. I'm pretty sure this feature works seamlessly in South Korea, which is the only country that Samsung deems relevant for testing their products and services.
