Hi all,

S20 Ultra here, have taken plenty of great shots with my camera, the quick updates since launch have fixed most issues people had at launch with the cameras but somthing that occasionally bugs me is a delay in capturing a photo after pressing the button, resulting in missing the shot.

Typical scenario - taking a photo of my kids , they move a lot so you dont have long to get a shot, I  pull the the phone out, line up the shot and press the button and nothing, 1 second, maybe 2 and it takes the shot and its not the shot you wanted.

It certainly isnt all the time, sometimes the shot is pretty much instant, I am begining to suspect its related to the auto focus, the phone doesnt focus quick enough or maybe doesnt think its focussed (often it looks fine on screen) so wont take the shot quickly when you need it to.

Any ideas?

are you shooting at 108mpx? if so it is normal.

Otherwise as you said it may be the phone waiting to focus on something before taking the picture

Have the same problem.  Sometimes it takes up to 5 secs before it takes the shot!  So freakin annoying!  I've never had a phone camera this bad!  Almost all my pictures look worse than the S10+ that I traded in, and definitly look worse than my wife's N10+.  Pictures look over processed.  Super zoom is unusable, and autofocus issues probably wont be fixed.  A $1400 piece of *****!  Not sure I'm gonna trust Samsung again and their great marketing.

Autofocus issue cannot be fixed unfortunately.

You have learned that if you see a lot of mpx it does not mean better than 12mpx. And that is good for you, do not preorder, wait for reviews and do not buy high mpx sensors which are just marketing...

I don't agree that the phone has a bad camera, despite the quirks and minor weaknesses I have taken plenty of great shots, most the issues it had at launch were resolved in updates.

Dxmomark rated the ultra camera very highly https://www.dxomark.com/samsung-galaxy-s20-ultra-camera-review/

From what I've read regarding the S20 ultra's autofocus issues, they are down to the massive sensor. Because of that, they had to get rid of the Dual Pixel autofocus that has been there since the s7 just for the higher 108mp and this led to worse autofocus issues. I do not own and will never own any 108mp device but from my knowledge of cameras I can say the focusing issues cannot just be fixed by a software update.

Sorry but you are wrong. The sensor is massive and that can be an autofocus problem. But the fact that the sensor is big is not the cause why the dual pixel is missing. Dual pixel is missing because the 108mpx are still so small that you cannot use the 2 sides of the pixel to focus so you have to rely on a pdaf sensor which uses 30 per cent of the sensor instead of 100 per cent like dual pixel.

Since it is a phone the sensor is still small compared to a full frame pdaf camera and so the 30 per cent focusing area is just too small to get a quick focus.

The problem in the end is the 108mpx, a 48mpx would have got away with that, bigger overall pixels at 48mpx, the much better tetracell instead of nonacell binning and the possibility to implement dual pixel.

Furthermore embedding more pixels does not mean taking better pics, so they went for the 108mpx number instead of the 48 or 12 because chickens will see a high number and will buy it, and there are a lot since people still think that the s7 to s10 cameras are bad because they have few mpx when in reality they have been the best ones of their years.

Well,  marketing pidgeons also believe that the s7 has the same sensor of the s10 because it is 12mpx but that is a whole yet funny story to tell.

In the end the fact of using a 48 mpx sensor with dual pixel is what makes the p30 and p40 pros focus very fast, because huawei could implement dual pixel. Both sensors are smaller than the the s20U sensor but they do not show those problems (don't be fooled however by huawei marketing in reality the sensor on the p40 is the same on the p30 in fact the p40 of those 50mpx only uses a square of 48mpx which is the same size of the p30 sensor, the edges are used for video stabilisation and if you manipulated the software to let you see what the device os hides in the prewiew you would notice that the edges of that sensor cannot be put in focus in fact the sensor size past the p30 size is already too big to be put in focus in a smartphone, so in the future expect more marking about bigger sensors when in reality the phone uses only a small portion of it due to physical limits and no one will tell you that.)

Do not fall victim to marketing and inform yourselves guys,it is the only way to get good products at reasonable price instead of having manufacturers charge a lot for bad products.

Yeah, I agree. Imo the regular s20 would take better photos than the ultra in most situations. Also, by bigger sensor yeah I was wrong it is dependent on the 108mp for DPAF. If they did somehow fit an even larger sensor (like 1 inch somehow into a smartphone with this 108mp) would I be right in saying that because the pixels would increase in size then DPAF would be possibly feasible? Anyway, I really have no problems with even 12mp for detail (even zooming in) so I read past the hype of the 108mp. All I hope is that manufactures back out of the'108mp' or '64mp' trend and just give a phone with a high quality 48mp camera, a 48mp telephoto and a 16mp ultra wide. No one needs more than that.

yes let's hope so, from the rumors samsung is working on a 150mpx camera, if that thing goes into the next s30 they are done for good. In the end a 48mpx with a tetracell binning and a big sensor but not so big slightly smaller than the s20 ultra sensor is the best choice. The only way to step up the camera game in the end is putting big size sensors on all cameras and having there perform equally on all light conditions so for example you can swap to the telefoto or ultra wide in low light without getting a black and noise video/photo.

For me you can top at 48mpx with tetracell binning with triple aperture 1.5, 1.8, 2.4 , a variabile zooming lense (which is currently a already developed tech) which can cover the 2x to 5x range fully optically and a 12mpx with a sensor which is the same size of the s20 non ultra main sensor, 16mpx ultra wide like the one on the s10 plus just with bigger pixels to have even performance across the 3 cameras.

For the marketing an ultra version just slap in a 10x full optical zoom, 20x hybrid and stop it there.

The reality is that in current smartphones we have hit the top of what physics allow in compact devices,, since you cannot put bulky camera lenses sensors with the s20U size and beyond you cannot put in focus all the sensor (that is why the huawei p40 although claimed to be bigger uses a smaller area), increasing mpx count will not mean better photos because you can increase the amount of mpx but if the sensor capability of distinguishing light does not improve accordingly you will have 0 improvement.

The last real frontier is making the non main cameras even with the main one, and what is that? 1 year? 2 years at most? And then only marketing numbers can be used to push the sells.

Smartphones are topping out the limits of sensors and silicon chips there is little improvement path and for the camera after that 0 improvement possibile, phone performance may only grow if silicon is swapped for carbon nanotubes or 3d transistor stacking will offer a long evolution path.

Try turning off "auto HDR" on the camera settings cog icon.

Also I had best picture turned on (the little circle that tells you the best lighting etc)

All these features are great for taking a picture of a statue or flower and really do make the pic pop.

But for kids... You need instant shot so no time for the 4 cameras to pick the light out and the shadows etc.

Try it ☺
