@Ashmore: When you start to scroll down past your favourites, the alphabet will appear on the right hand side of the screen, but only briefly. This should still allow a window of opportunity for you to tap on the letter you want, but you may also wish to leave a finger rested on the screen so the bar remains visible. I recommend doing this with your left hand, and tapping the appropriate letter with the right.
